I killed a trophy button buck yesterday with a cap and ball revolver. My first. I used 43 grains 777 fff and a Lee conical weighing 211 gr.. Complete penetration, behind the shoulder with a good size exit hole. He was 25-30 yards away, went about 10 yards.

Congrats, plan on trying one with my 60'army when I get on land.

I've heard it said that it's unfair to use cap n' ball pistols on deer sized game because there under powered, but at close range and proper shot placement they should do the job just fine.

Jeff;

Nice shot. I see that you used a Lee conical. I posted a topic below about buffalo conicals, but I'm interested in any experiences you may have had with conicals.

Are they more/less accurate?

Obviously, the killing power looks good on deer sized animals.

Do you have any tips or tricks you can share with us?

Nice shootong Jeff.....Thanks for posting the load used. Just got my ROA yesterday. Was wanting to try that. I asked in earlier post if they were worthy to hunt with.....Guess that questions answered. You are the AWSOME POSSUM!!!

Congratulations on your kill, but, will you please tell me what is a "trophy button buck"? Since when is a button buck a trophy? Being a novice at deer hunting , I will defer to your explanation ...but, it better be good!

I don't know about Jeff.....but if I killed ANY deer with a BP Pistol, it would definatly be a trophy......and talk about BRAGGIN' RIGHTS! Jeff, you da' man!

Spitpatch is right on, the Old Army made this small buck a trophy to me.

The scope and Hogue grips are all part of an experiment, I just wanted to see if it could be done.

With 37 grains of 3f 777, a Wonder Wad and 210 gr Lee Conical it will Chrony at 975 fps, standard deviation of 24. Accuracy is w/in 2" at 25 yds. I coated my bullets w/ a mixture equal parts Alox and Molybidium(sp?) spray, leading was minimal.
