As many of you know, IF you have an FFL MidwayUSA will offer you a dealer discount. However, I just spoke with the management team and they told me that if you have a website and the ability, not doing it, just the ability, to sell any item, then MidwayUSA will no longer offer you a dealer discount.

We spend from 40,000-70,000 dollars per year with them and they just cut us off. Now, we have been a customer for 10 years, have had a website for 10 years, and this is just now an issue. I bluntly told then that it appears they do not want my business, and they agreed. Horsecrap in my opinion and I will no longer business with them.

Just an FYI and my attempt to show them the same discourteous service they are showing me.

What the heck was the dealer discount for, if not so you can resell whatever you bought from them.  Don't those morons realize that they were getting more customers from your efforts?  Some of the customers might then buy direct in the future.  What are they smoking at Midway, that doesn't sound like a smart business decision to me!

Just some thoughts - It sounds like they do not want to be a wholesaler - just retail. Since supplies of every thing has dried up or just a trickle, they can make more money doing just retail on the few supplies they get in and not selling it wholesale to guys like you. Is it fair? No - just a business decision, no loyalty, money is the bottom line. If supplies become plentiful again, maybe they will get back into the wholesale business.

Why can't you buy your supplies directly from the distributors like Mid Way or Mid South does and cut out the middle man altogether? I personally do not have enough volume, buying just what I personally need. Maybe you don't have enough volume either, I just do not know how it works on that level.

I know it is tough being a small business owner - I hope things work out for you - best of luck.

Volume is the issue, as well as loyalty, in a sense. Why would Speer sell 5000 bullets of one type to me at a lower cost than say Midway, when they order 20-30K of the same as well as all the others, better for them to support the bigger buyer. If I want to order in that size (Distrubitor level) then they will, I just cannot support it. I realize it is just a business decision, but after as much as we do with them I thought we had a decent business relationship, I guess not. Sierra will sell to us at a great price, but we have to stock all of thier bullets, which while I use a lot of them, there are some calibers I do not and some that I use very infrequently, protection on thier part as well.

I'm not in any way telling you where to buy from. I'm simply alerting everyone to my experience with a given company. You make your own choices and I'm just giving you some facts to consider among all the others you gather.

I for one try to buy locally when ever I can , however I do every so often buy from Midway , as well as Midsouth and Brownells , But it looks like more will be going to the last 2 .

If they ( Midway ) are only looking at the bottom line and want to turn themselves into a web based Big Box store so be it .

Just josh'n...I tried to by a 223 trim die and went on their website and saw it was on sale for about $10 off the usual price. I though alright, it's my lucky day!

I ordered it and it came through for the retail price and not the sale price....hmmmm....I cancelled the order and did it again.  Same thing.  So I called and spoke to a service rep.  He said the sale is over...I asked when??? He said as of a few minutes ago because they met the stock reduction on that item an hour before I ordered.

I said, "May I speak to a supervisor?"  Fellow gets on and tells me that they put certain items on sale when they don't sell as intended until they get to a certain number of them and then the price goes back up to the original.  I said, "That's bait and switch, your website still lists the same price and I'm a long time customer and I'd like the sale price as advertized."  He said, "We realize that and are changing the price back so please refresh your screen and the corrected price will be listed."

Three back and forth e-mail with Mr. Potterfield in the next 3 days and I bought the die from elsewhere.  So much for customer loyalty.

I just think it's wrong...at least in my situation.  If they want to exclude dealers...they should just do it and come clean about it.

It sounds like they are operating a lot like some of the banks and credit card companies in America. Well when things in America turn around and they will just remember what companies treated you right. Try to turn this negative into a positive. If you can find another supplier never do business with Midway again.

Midway's dealer discount has eroded to the point where, in most cases, you are only saving pennies over their listed retail price. I don't buy in volume, but for the last several months have not had any trouble finding items I needed at better prices from other suppliers, most recently from Mid-South....you go Dirt..... Midway should be able to offer better prices.

While I'm at it, what happend to Lock-Stock and Barrel?

I had been a loyal retail customer of Midway but their current practices are turning me off. 

They went from listed price (shipping included ) to extra for shipping.  OK.  The cost of shipping went up.

Then Midway took my orders, filled as much off the shelf at the time and shipped that, then "banked" the remainder as Back Ordered, made me wait months or never for the items to arrive, and twice I  have found that individual items from various unfulfilled backorders (not the total backorder) had been received by Midway, but Midway was waiting for EVERYTHING backordered on an order to be on hand at one time before they shipped.  They were even selling out of the specific items on hand before all of the parts of my order were in hand so there is NEVER a complete order to fulfill.  That isn't right. 

The loss of their wholesale supply is hurting their bottom line.  If they can't sell what they advertise, then their retail base dries up too.  So they shut off their wholesale sales to keep the lights on and the store open to their retail customers, from whom they make the greatest profit. 

Makes business sense to me in these economic times, but not treating your customers right (talking to them, making other arrangements, offering the items now - but with increased shipping, communication, etc.) is grounds for this loyal customer to shop elseware.

Land_Owner I agree. I've been ordering stuff with Midway for many years also.
I had a go around with them last month about there high shipping cost.
In Oct of 2009 I ordered 5 boxes of Flex Tip & Ballistic Tip bullets. They had 3 of them and shipped right out. Last month I got the last 2 boxes ( that's 4 months ) of bullets. Shipping on these 2 boxes ( a $50 order ) was almost $15. So between the 1st and the 2nd order I paid a total of almost $30 in shipping. I called and asked why the higher cost for shipping. Got the usual story. I told them I wouldn't be ordering anymore until they changed there shipping policies that would lower shipping cost.
Mr. Potterfield should be let know from more loyal customers to get back to what made them successful years ago.
Since then I have ordered more bullets from a local dealer. Even with sales tax my cost was less than the Midway cost with shipping.

Each person has to make up their own mind where to spend their hard earned dollars and that is the way it should be. I certainly don't recommend stopping doing business with every firm anyone says they have a problem with. It is just another piece of the puzzle we must solve to decide who gets our money and our loyalty.

I've not totally stopped doing business with them as there are some items they list at decent prices that I don't seem able to locate elsewhere or at least not easily or at a similar price so they remain a rarely (very rarely) used source of supply and likely will but it's the exception not the rule when I buy from them. They kinda made me mad long ago the way they said no to my request to advertise here. Saying no is certainly not a problem and doesn't make me have hard feelings toward the companies that say no when I ask. They too have to decide where to spend their hard earned advertising dollars but they don't have to insult and put down the way Midway did. After that they stopped being a regular source of anything for me.

Then they changed policy and now charge not only shipping cost but add in a handling charge and a packaging fee. How the heck do  you expect to do mail order business without packaging and handling your items and really how do you do business period without handling the items. Those should be built into your pricing structure not added at time of order.

Many companies have strange shipping charge methods some a flat rate which tells to help folks who make larger orders and hurt folks who make small orders. I don't like flat charges but don't necessarily not deal with folks who use them and if I'm placing a big order might even like it but it's not a fair system.

What is fair is to accept that if you do mail order you must box and ship items out to your customers so you figure that into your over all price structure. Pretty much everyone passes on the cost of shipping and doesn't try to build it in unless they are hoping to make an extra profit on it. That is one of the things I like so well about GBO Sponsor Midsouth Shooter's Supply they charge you exactly what they pay to actually ship your item. They don't charge you to wrap it or pack it or to seal it up and wait on UPS, FEDEX or USPS to come pick it up and take it away. It's a fair system. Midway could learn a thing or two about doing business from them.

In these times everyone is gonna be out of something from time to time. That's another thing I like about Midsouth tho I think it is going to eventually hurt their bottom line. If you ask them to place items on back order when they aren't in stock they will do that. If one item comes in they will either ship it or hold it until all items come in as you wish. When I last spoke with Michael there he said they had huge stocks of primers and powder set aside for customers who ordered them and they were held on back order until their entire order arrives. They box the items and make room to store those boxes with powder and primers until their order is complete or they ask for a partial shipment. But unlike some others they actually hold the customer's items when they come in until the order is complete or the customer as for a partial shipment. That's in my opinion taking care of customers but I do fear they are gonna run out of run to do it eventually.

Perhaps by now the shortages have been caught up enough they've shipped out most of them.

I've been doing business with Midsouth almost as long as they've been in business and sure was glad to have them come on board as a Sponsor. They are one of the best companies I've bought from and expect to continue doing business with them a long long time.

Midway on the other hand I'll hold my nose and buy from on a rare occasion when I can't find it elsewhere and they happen to have it in stock which these days seems a rare event as well.

Well, this is a nonissue for me since I have to shop well and don't get dealer discounts anyway.  The good thing about MidwayUSA is that they have an incredible inventory and when I order from them it would be VERY unusual for me not to have the stuff on my doorstep within 2 or 3 days.  Larry Potterfield started pretty small and has built a business over many years and I don't blame him for not wanting to fuel competition by supplying his competitors.

Now a little advice on the reedsammo.com web site.  To be greeted with BUNCH of legalize when entering a web site is pretty unfriendly.  That page alone would stifle any desire I might have had to do business with that company.  My advice; tone it down a LOT.

I just got off the phone with MIDWAYUSA and had a little discussion concerning their business practices.
I informed them that there is many, many past & current customers of theirs that are not very happy over their choice to cease doing business with REED1911.
I also told them that so far all who have commented on this subject has stated that they would no longer be doing business with them, myself included.
They informed me that this has long been a standard practice to which I replied that it must have been one that they didn't enforce very well since REED1911 has been doing business with them for a number of years with no changes on their part.
I also suggested that he relay this message on to the higher ups in management.
He assured me he would.   :-\

Maybe if they get enough calls they may reconsider their position about this.
Even if they do reverse their actions I don't think I would go back with them.
That is not the proper way to do business.

GB...as one of your Moderators, a Contributor to GBO, and an AVID reloader with a flush bank account, I have looked over Midsouth Shooters Supply web site again and again.  I HEAR YOU LOUD AND CLEAR! 

However, MidwayUSA has a fantastic web site (as well as Sportsmen's Guide for other products) and Midsouth is line item after line item after line item that is tedious at best for this Visual Purchaser.  I like pictures.  Reading a list of items is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Perhaps not jazzing up the web page is one way to fight costs and perhaps this reloader needs to start thinking outside of his box and give them another good hard look.

Sounds like Midway is exercising the instinct of self preservation.  To state the obvious, they are a website that sells stuff.  So why would they want to supply other websites with bulk amounts at a discount?
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

Because it keeps your buying power up with those that you buy from.
The more you sell the more you will buy and therefore the larger discount you can buy it for.
The small discount that MIDWAY offers is far less than their profit margin so they still can control to some extent what the other dealers that buy from them has to charge.

I tend to buy locally as long as it is within 10% of the best price I find. I have a local shop that treats me well.
When I am not buying local it is all based on price.

Supposing that this is, in fact, a new policy, there's a way that it makes sense and is good for most of us (i.e. the plain consumer who is MidwayUSA's primary customer):

Selling to dealers causes supply problems for the small-quantity buyer (i.e. the individual consumer).  If supplies are tight, it makes sense to protect your core business (the individual consumer) by preventing dealers from buying everything you have of a given item that you might not get more stock on for quite some time.

This may not be a factor in the decision at all, and it may or may not even be a new policy.  The foregoing is simply one way in which this policy could make good sense.  I, for one, was very appreciative when a local store took my suggestion (which may have been suggested by others, too; I don't know) to limit quantities of primers anyone could buy to two boxes per day when supplies were tightest.  That policy assured that people like me, who only need small amounts of those items, have a stock available to them from the local business.  Absent that policy, I'd either have had to stop shooting, or I'd have had to buy a relatively large quantity from a mail-order house, which means I'd not have gone back to the local outfit.  It's possible, just possible, that Midway has/had a similar thing in mind.

Personally, I've been distinctly irritated with Midway for a while because of their decision to not only take shipping out of their products' prices, but also to make shipping a secondary profit center.  They also did relatively little for me with a barrel I bought from them a few years ago with an improperly-made chamber.  Having said that, they recently honored the lifetime warranty on a MidwayUSA-brand tumbler (which they haven't labeled that way for years) by sending me a new one no-charge.  I appreciated that.  Even though it was merely adhering to the warranty, I kind of expected them to try to dodge that one.

I would happily do more business with Mid-South, but they're just enough further away that their total cost is higher than Midway's (or others), mainly due to shipping.  I really wish we had a major supplier in the West.   :(

All that said, in these recent times of shooting-sports manufacturers, distributors, and dealers being able to charge essentially anything they want for most everything they have, it could also be simply a case of wanting to make the most money possible before the crash crushes them and everyone else.

GB...as one of your Moderators, a Contributor to GBO, and an AVID reloader with a flush bank account, I have looked over Midsouth Shooters Supply web site again and again.  I HEAR YOU LOUD AND CLEAR! 

However, MidwayUSA has a fantastic web site (as well as Sportsmen's Guide for other products) and Midsouth is line item after line item after line item that is tedious at best for this Visual Purchaser.  I like pictures.  Reading a list of items is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Perhaps not jazzing up the web page is one way to fight costs and perhaps this reloader needs to start thinking outside of his box and give them another good hard look.

I seldom visit any of their websites really. I get the Midsouth catalog and do all my ordering from it. I used to be signed up for their monthly e-mail notices of specials but when I changed e-mail addresses I lost it and haven't figured out how to get back on the list. Yeah I know a phone call would do it but I'm a catalog shopper almost exclusively. If folks want my business they must send me a hard copy catalog and take my order via phone. It's the only way I order.

I order from both Midway USA and Mid South. I really like the way Mid South handles back orders. I back ordered primers from both Mid Way and Mid South, both back ordered. I would get an email from Mid Way saying they had the primers in I ordered. I read the email and got on line to order. they said they were in stock, both email and on line. It kept kicking me out saying there were not primers available. I gave up and called the next day. Naturally they were out. So the next time I got an email, I did not see until the next day and called as soon as I got off work, guess what, they were sold out. the next time I got an email, I called right away, 3 hours after I received it. They said they sold out an hour ago. All the while I did not hear any thing from Mid South. I gave up on Mid Way for primers, by the time I would see the email and called they were always out. About 6 months after I placed the order with Mid South, I got a phone call, they asked me if I still wanted the CCI small pistol primers - I said heck yes! The Brown truck pulled up a few days later. These primers were  at a much lower price than I can buy locally, if I can get them at all. It went a long way toward my feeling of Mid South, I liked them anyway, but that sure helped.
