hog debate
« on: March 01, 2010, 10:39:30 AM »
One of the guy's at the station say's a wild boar can not make a sharp turn, such as a 90 degree. If your being charged all you have to do is side step the beast and he'll miss you. This is for a soda!! Gambling is not allowed at the firehouse. Can a wild boar make a sharp turn, that's the question. Fireman 108

after seeing a ground hog climb a tree i pretty much figure most critters can do stuff they  ain't suppose to be able to do . But the one time I hunted hogs I was told to side step them and in most cases they keep going on by . But if you ever tried to get a hog to go into a shute and gave them an inch they can turn around 180 so a short 90 seems possible .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Tell him to give it a try!!!  They can spin 180 about as fast as a dog.

Of course they can! A barn pig can and a wild hog is far more agile than a domestic pig.

Do a YUTUBE search under boar hunt and I'm sure you'll find visual proof.

It may shed some light!  ;D

What likely spawns such ideas is that most hog charges aren't real charges but merely you being in the path of where the hog wants to escape. So if you side step and all the hog is after is to escape most likely it will just run on passed you without incident. Of course it also might take a swipe at you as it goes by or it might if the charge was real turn and come for you.

Truth is ya never know until it's over what a hog will do. I've found a bullet between the eyes pretty much ends the charge in your favor.

Have a cousin in east Texas that deals with these critters a LOT and he's got plenty of scars on his legs to show for it.His advice is to jump over them and turn and be ready to jump again if they try again. He says biggest thing to avoid is letting the hog knock you down...then you're in trouble. If you can....... getting a couple feet above the ground like in a tree is best.He says it's better if you don't drop your gun getting up the tree too.

If you ever have seen a cornered boar fighting off dogs, you will get a real sense of just how fast one of these can charge and turn and swipe with those tusk!!

I've killed hundreds of hogs over in Turkey.  And let me tell you, if a hog wants you, and you are on the ground, you are in big trouble.  A wild hog is one of the most agile animals around.  And don't think they can't jump either.

We trapped about 40 wild hogs inside a stone walled orchard.  When we started shooting many of them tried jumping the wall.  The wall was only six foot high in some areas, and a few managed to get their front feet over the top of the wall.  Although none made it over the wall they sure came close.  The Turks sitting on top of the wall watching, found another place to watch from.

When ever we trapped a bunch, and we would start shooting, some would run.  Others would go on the offensive, and start looking for the shooters.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I'll 2nd that!!!

My son shot one as I watched.  The boar went from standing still to over four (4) feet vertically in a single leap.  That's a lot of adrenalin to the muscles in MILLI-seconds.   That hog weighed 151 pounds.

My hunting partner and I got them out of our trap one hog at a time by securing a rope around their rear leg and when unconfined, grabbing them by both rear legs until the partner got on the snout and front legs to literally "hog tie" them and tape their mouths shut.

A little 60 pounder will whip a man right smartly in an even exchange when rear leg held.  After swapping the chore and doing four 60-pound boar this way, my partner and I looked at one another and asked if there wasn't a better way to get this done cause we were WHIPPED.  We look back on that day with mirth.  A couple of old dudes trying to subdue young boar hogs by hand.  What the heck were we thinking?

Graybeard is right, just because they typically don't turn when you step to the side, doesn't mean they can't.  I put a shot on a hog that was running away from me and missed just over his left side.  The hog turned right 90 degrees instantly and never broke stride.

Uh, I think I'd prefer my advise to come from someone who has a LOT of experiance but very few scars....... :o :D
