Shooting a Bus
« on: March 01, 2010, 04:30:33 PM »
Hello, I've lurked on this board for quite a while, basically figuring out the rules of thumb in making safe cannons.

Anyway, I was looking through youtube when I came across this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z928xU0V8oI

I highly doubt that was solid shot, and I was under the impression exploding rounds were illegal.

Any thoughts?

I'd guess that the cannon ball had a little help when it hit the bus. Frank

Couple of pounds of dynamite under the middle of the bus, most likely.

Looking at the video looks like it was riged with explosives.

I wonder who, if anybody, cleaned up the mess.

That was the Lone Pine Cannon Shoot, 2008. The bus did have "extra help" blowing up. Chuck, the owner of the property and host of the shoot, pulled the lanyard. It is held Memorial Day and Labor Day on his property in Central Oregon. I'm sure the mess was cleaned up, cause I went Labor Day, 2009, and no mess. Quite a shoot, lots of full sized and half scale cannons, Bowling Ball Mortars, a great time was had by all who attended. BoomLover

The way the bus blew up from within it was most likely Tannerite there are other videos of cars
& trucks being blown up on the web with this stuff and they all look about the same as far as results, there is
one case where someone blew up a dump truck with so much Tannerite that parts landed on the next ranch, the rancher was charged with
a crime his place was near a government facilities and they took a dim view of it...... as to explosive shells.....
I believe the Paulson  Brother's fire live ordnance but this is loaded and fired on a military range with their blessings
quite different than going out some place and blowing things up.....

WELCOME to the board, Sir!

What do you like to shoot?

(I'm glad I don't have to clean up the bus!)

155's (Fort Sill) left lots less to clean up (the dynomite in the roung burned most of the steel on direct hits).

Judging by the crowd's reaction, that alone was worth the price of admission.  :)

WELCOME to the board, Sir!

What do you like to shoot?

I've got a golf ball mortar that I've been messing around with over the winter. The barrel is 1.75" DOM tubing, with 3/4" wall thickness. I've got a 3/4" x 7/8" deep powder chamber in a plug welded in the breech. I recently updated the bed from pine to 1" maple from a tree I cut down for a neighbor, and I tried to make the barrel look a little better once I got a lathe. I still plan to make some sort of elevation screw for the front, and a spring loaded hammer for the percussion cap.

I'm planning to build some sort of golf ball howitzer next. I found some great plans for a boat howitzer I saved from CU_Cannon's website before geocites was shut down, but I've also been thinking of an 8 inch siege howitzer.

Real cannons are out of the question until I find a bigger lathe.  ;D
