will he be ok?
« on: March 01, 2010, 04:32:45 PM »
I shot a hog at about 6:00PM and didn't have a knife (stupid,I know). I just got home and it's about to rain...I have no place to throw the guts and I hear it's dangerous to let dogs drink any of the blood,so the question is "will he be ok till morning when I take him to the processors? It's gonna rain all night and be 50 degrees or cooler......thanks for the thoughts

bladerunner,
I just saw this post, so do not know if you got any help on your hog situation. I would get the guts out of the hog. Best thing is to have the hog hanging and if you have a #3 washtub, field dress the hog while it is hanging and let the guts go into the washtub and covered it up with heavy stuff so dogs can`t get into it! It would be best to get the hide off also to facilitate faster cooling of the meat. Just be sure hog is where dogs and other critters can`t get to the meat!
Lot`s of luck!!

Second that. Pork ruins FAST. Get the guts out as soon as possible and start cooling it down. I'd sure not wanna eat it if you leave them in over night, in fact I personally would not.

thanks ya'll....it'll be my first time eating wild pork. from what I've read though,he should taste real good as there was no odor and he wasn't a huge hog.

What GrayBeard said.

I hunt hogs 12 months of the year.  When the temperature is 80 degrees one has four hours max to get the hog iced down or in a cooler; otherwise it will spoil.   It is best to field dress the hog as soon as it is killed especially if it is gut shot.  Much of the "strong tasting" hog meat that people complain about is really rotten hog meat.

They only stink on the outside, First you gotta wash em real good( we use a pressure washer), then butcher and process them.
I have seen 250 to 300 pound boars that ate real good!

So have I; quite a few of them.  I wash all the hogs we keep for ourselves as soon as possible,  usually at a car wash.

There is one guy who will never get another hog from me so long as I live.  He has complained about every hog I ever gave him, all 8 or 10 of them.   He bought me a sample of  "strong tasting" meat from a fat sow that field dressed at 212 pounds:  The meat was rotten.   He took that sow to a fly by night butcher who let  it hang in his cooler for over two weeks before processing it.
