I would think if there was any interst you would  remain involved . It appears here the horse has already left the barn.

Here in Canada prices have gone up quite a bit in the last few years , and a thousand in Canadain funds is really not far off for a decent rifle .With Kimber ,Sako,TC, and CZ your making a down payment , and it is not something the boys at gamp are going to look at "in awh!!" other than you sure put out some coin.

I have two in the safe with scopes , that if I were to replace today, would run close to two thousand , and they are not in the high grade line up.
I had a pretty Sako for awhile  It was a very nice gun and fancy stock Etc. It shot and handled like a dream. How ever , I was afraid to take it hunting , for I might scrach it , thus would not take it through any rough or thick bush. I sold it 'cause your not going to take a" Caddy" four wheeling .Since then I have never bothered with anything that was not a working mans gun, that could take a ding and still retain it's value.
Now when  this ol' man hangs in the towel, the guns probably have a family owner , or might be sold. They will all have a few dings with some history to tell. And all in good shape since I look after them .

Who knocked the dust off of this thread? ;D  It was started back in 2003, and it had been growing moss since 2006.

I ended up buying a Winchester Model 70 Classic LT, 24" blued barrel, very nice walnut stock.  After my purchase, I started another thread about the problems I had with the rifle, and the problems I had getting Winchester to fix it.  After multiple trips back to the factory to get the feed rails worked on, I was never able to warm up to the rifle again.  Instead of being an heirloom that got packed on memorable hunts, it was an untrusted safe queen.  It finally got sold.  Cue the sad music.

My very reliable, 1956 made Winchester 88 in .308 will have to be what gets handed down to the kids.  I've used it for about 26 years, and it shoots into .75" or less with loads it likes.  It has a lot to do with my handle on here being leverfan.

The only bolt gun in my safe these days is a Remington 700 Mountain LSS in .260 Remington, which is almost nothing like the blued and walnut Winchester 70 I bought.  One big difference is that the Remington has been completely reliable.

And there we have it!

I had a 700 LSS Mountain Rifle in 30-06.  Loved the way it handled and looked.  Shot well enough to hunt with, but wasn't a serious tackdriver by any means.  Groups bounced around from 1.5-2", sometimes below 1", but not often enough to be able to talk about them.

The Model 88 is a very nice Heirloom to hand down.Good ones like yours are getting very scarce to find anymore. Many of us lament the fact that they are no longer made or they did a horrible job on the triggers shortly before they discontinued them..I've been lucky to have owned 2 of them in my life..and wished I still had my first one back to pass down..

Since someone knocked the dust off this thread already.

If it has to be factory...Remington Model 700 LSS.

Remington Model 700 SPS Stainless in McMillan Classic Stock.  Might have to purchase used to get under the $1000.  If someone was a stickler for new change the stock to a B&C Medalist.

Howa 1500 Stainless Steel Barreled Action set in a B&C Medalist or McMillan Stock would work too.
