1983 contender
« on: March 02, 2010, 05:22:46 AM »
I just purchased my first T/C pistol.  I'm a former Ruger fan, so I figured I can't go wrong with an older frame.  The SN# puts it in the 1983 range.  My only concern is that after depressing the trigger guard to open the action, then closing. an audible click is heard once the hammer is lightly touched.  is this normal operation?  Are there any common problems with is action that I should start collecting spare parts for?  Thanks much for your expert advice guys.
I now know why I always wanted one of these.  They kinda remind me of a modern duelling pistol.  The ohio deer population will be effected

The hammer on my older Contender will click only after pulling the trigger.  Open and close the action, click trigger, then click hammer.  If the hammer is clicking before you click the trigger then the trigger might be adjusted where it is going off when the action is closed.  Hope I explained this in some form that can be understood.

I have a frame dated to 1980 and that is the one that gets the most use AND with no issues what-so-ever. Fire, clean, lube and repeat!

When you touch the trigger, you are tripping the sear.  The gun must be cocked again by pulling the trigger guard back which unlocks the barrel.  This is normal for the pre-G2 models.  The only issue I ever had was a broken hammer on a 1970's model, and a damaged receiver when I accidently put a muzzleloading barrel on a pre-G2 frame.  T/C came through in both cases with free repairs.

thanks for the advice guys, looks like I'm gonna get a lot of enjoyment out of this one.   I understand that the lever to open the action acts as a set trigger.  but upon closing the action, when I place any pressure on the hammer either fore, aft or side to side,  there is a click inside the action.  like something isn't lining up until the hammer is moved.  I do have the little hammer block nipple protruding, to prevent the hammer from resting on the firing pins,  maybe this is the reason.  I'll have to dig her out of the safe and try it with the hammer block retracted.
thanks again guys
