I've done this using a Tasco 8-32X on my XP's, I use a bipod and sandbag the rear grip. This is shooting from a bench. I get the crosshair on target with my eye close to the scope and adjust the sandbags to hold the scope on target. Then I back off to normal pistol distance, looking thru the scope you'll see a small circle of light, there will be the target & crosshairs and you're ready to shoot.
I use this a lot when dialing loads for T/C's and XP's, I have a 10X Burris EER, don't really use it much since I tried this method.
Ernie, xphunter here, enlightened me to this approach, dude knows a thing or 2 about long-range pistol work.
