That's why I use cast bullets Darrell, That and the satisfaction of shooting game with a bullet you cast in a cartridge you loaded. I like it. Your goal is a very easy one to accomplice. 8)

Thanks BB,

Yep, at my age I will never get to do any of the great hunting I like to read about, and the main reason for hunting at this house is Meat, but considering I have used my own loads for hunting for 40 +/- years, using my own bullet seemed one more step which was within reach.

I have cast bullets for years. but mostly for handguns, so have been doing a lot of reading and liked what I saw about the results from the .444 and 45/70.

I understand other calibers can and have done a fine job, but for this task there is something about that big hunk of lead which attracts me.  Of course this could have nothing at all to do with the post after post in which "bang flop" seems to be a very common happening after the trigger break.

Anyway, looking forward to completing the circle of ammo making as far as is reasonably possible, and especially to that first BANG/FLOP!!!!!!!!!!!

Have been getting what seems to be wise council on the Cast Boolet forum as to loading possibilities.

Have NEVER loaded a cartridge with the wide - mild to wild - possibilities of the 45/70, so am needing all the info I can get at to just how to start and run my series of test loads with my RCBS 405gr cast bullet.

Although the RUGER #1 can safely handle loads well into the "wild" levels, no one is saying they are fun to shoot as a steady diet.  Seems like maybe something in the 1300 - 1600fps range will be more then enough for hunting.

Keep em coming!

I use the Lee 405 FP, cast with wheel weights, in my Ruger No. 3 and Buffalo Classic.  I've taken several deer and countless hogs and never have recovered a slug--all complete pass-throughs, and no blood trail.  Just a pool of blood, DRT, and a .458 dia. exit hole.  I came up with a bucket of Rem 300 HPs real cheap at Cabelas bargain cave a while back, and the BC shoots them nicely as well.  I'd of thought they would expand and really blow out the off side, but they must be tough little buggers or I'm not driving 'em hard enough because, on my pigs at least, they hold together and punch through with little apparent expansion.

Dennis,  Good to read all the accounts of success with the big Ol'caliber.

Just rec'd an "E" from RCBS this morning. telling me to send back the 405gr. mold for replacement.

The gas check shank is under sized and the Hornady crimp on checks may or may not stay in place after sizing.

Just got this one broke in nicely, but guess I can do it again.
