we have a thinb layer of ice around here, but not thick enough for me to venture out for some fishing action just yet. i have 3 weeks of deer hunting left before i start devoting time to it anyway, how is the fishing in your neck of the woods?

well here it is a bit over a month later and i have snuck out ice fishing a few times. caught a nice northern, and a crappie off of a tip-up with a 5 inch shiner! my pal caught a 19 ich crappie the week before. he let that nice breeder back into the water. next time out i will try to get pictures.

I looked at the ice here yesterday and its a frosty white color not safe yet its too thin anyway. I was told that clear is safe white isn't of course if its thick? BigBill

the only way to know for sure is to either drill holes or using a spud. i typically figure that 3 chops with a spud without hitting water is safe ice. if unsure of the ice, check every ten feet. be really careful!

The very first time i was ice fishing I was on 3" thick ice if I hopped on the ice the water would go up and down in the hope not a good feeling so I left and came back a week later after a cold spell and we had 20" of ice. A few days later we had the whole auger blade was the thickness of the ice so I was really safe. Lastyear we didn't have much ice at all and this year we just lost our saran wrap(too thin) its melted and if it continues like this there will be no ice fishing at all this year again unless I go further north of where i am in the state. I just may start throwing some plastics and jigs if there is no ice just to go fishing. BigBill
