Wayne called to tell me my 260 Remington Superlight barrel is almost done!!

It would have been done sooner, but he had a run on 6.5 rebores and had a tool failure on a barrel, not mine fortunately, and had to make a new cutter then run two test barrels to make sure it was cutting good. Mine is now rebored, all he has to do is cut the neck and throat and it will be on the way home.  ;)

Tim,
At first I was wondering what you did to attract the attention of the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
I think your going to like the .260. It has quickly become one of my favorites, but haven't gotten the chance to take game with it yet. I'm hoping to correct that later this month on a sheep hunt. I'm using 120gr. Barnes TSX bullets over H414. Sometimes things just work out right, especially in this case. I had more H414 on hand than any other powder and it just so happened that this cartridge loved it.
I'm looking forward to reading about your results.
Congrats,
Don

Tim,
Another bullet I've been wanting to try, not sure it will fit in my Rem. Mod Seven bolt action, is Hornady's 160gr. RN http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=744461. It's very long and from my experience with heavy for caliber RN bullets, should be very accurate and an good choice for big game out to 150 yards.

I've got plans to use the 120gr TTSX, best QuickLoad prediction for the 20" barrel is IMR4831 at ~2850fps with a COL of 3.030" which is way longer than you can cycle in a bolt gun, Hybrid 100V looks better, but I don't have any yet and haven't found it locally. I won't be after anything bigger than deer, so the heaveir bullets aren't necessary, if I were to hunt elk, I'd go with 140gr, or better yet the 35Whelen Imp!!  The 260 is a 1:9" twist, so I dunno how it would do with heavier spitzers, probably not well.

Thanks,

Tim

I loaded my 120gr. TSX bullets to 2.775". Of course rather than buy .260 cases, I'm using the cheaper and more plentiful .243s.

I am awaiting a range report Tim.  :P

If it holds a decent group I am thinking I want one.

Shooting a 3-shot group in less than 2 minutes, I expect the first two to be real close, and the third to open the group up to 1½-2", that's been my experience with the 243 Superlight anyway. 1 bullet is plenty for deer, so I don't much really care what it does after that. ;)

That's the same way I look at the Superlight .223. As long as the first shot from a cold barrel goes where I want it to go, I could care less how it groups. One shot on a varmint should do just fine.

Yup!!  ;)

I just got the email invoice, twist is 1:8", so the bigger bullets won't be a problem, might have to try some of the Berger VLDs!!  8)

I was hoping you got the 1-8.  So far the Berger's have had the best accuracy for me in my encore.  Barrel is 26"heavy though. Tried 120's and some factory rem as well.  You are going to love the 260.  I got rid of both 7mm and 300 magnums after I got it.  I feel it really is a do all caliber.  Mine is just a little heavy to carry, like nine pounds.  Would like to hear your 20" velocities.  Might tempt me to chop mine. :'(

Jerry

I'll send a handful of the 140's.  You'll probably buy more. ;D

Thanks Jerry, I'll just pick up box if I decide to shoot em, I don't like to shoot just a few, I do 24 - 30 loads in 3 shot increments using start data and work up.

I am placing an order for the .284 168 grain Hunting Match bullets to try in my 7mm-08 cause Berger says it is 1:10 optimal twist. When I get them in and loaded I will let y'all know how they do.

Common practice I think Tim. I load 15 bullets of the same powder and try about 4 powders with each bullet so that makes a good shoot at the range. 60 shots per bullet type/weight. Try about 10 different bullets and it is a day in bliss unless you are loading with AtLaw of course.

Not really, it's a good practice, but there are members here that go to the range with a couple random loads and expect to find a good load, then complain because their rifle isn't accurate as they'd like, so it's not as common as you think.  :-\ I load in ½gr increments, three shots each up to max, I've had many loads go from so-so to excellent and back again, so loading in bigger increments like 1gr each can totally miss the sweet spot, I used to take 6 to 8 guns to the range at a time, but that's a thing of the past with the range opportunities here now.  :-X

Luckily I have the place to shoot still. My family has about 500 acres of private land and we lease 1500 acres so room is not a problem.

I am pretty much the same on increments. I have a few guns that like max loads and some that like min loads so it is always fun to get a new one. ;D ;D ;D

I generally only take 2 rifles to the range with me, but I take a couple of pistols too. Oh and if the wife goes I have to carry a shotgun and skeets cause she is going to shoot skeets before we leave.

I stopped by Wholesale Sports on the way back from the Dentist, they only had the 140gr target VLDs, but they did have the 130gr Hunting VLD with a BC of .552, so I bought a box and used my $10 NWTF coupon, still cost $29 tho, they're not cheap at $39 a box, still not as spendy as Barnes tho!   :o The barrel should be here tomorrow.  ;D

I seated a bullet in a case just for fun, or rather tried to, the Hornady New Dimension seater plug is too shallow to press on the ogive of the long pointed bullet, so I'll have to deepen it slightly to make room for it. I used my 6mm Ackley seater die for this one, you can see the ring on the bullet where it made contact. This dummy round is seated to a COL of 3.00", which puts the base of the shank right at the neck/shoulder, I'll find out later today if Wayne cut the throat deep enough for it, the BBT should be delivering it this afternoon.

I am anxious to see how this works out! I would love to have a Handi in a lightweight 260. I have 2 .260 now, A Remington 700 TI and a Browning 1885. Please post all of the details you can! If it shoots good I want one.

I got the barrel yesterday, today I converted it to an improved extractor and mounted the scope, she's all ready to play now, decked out with a Leupold VX-II Ultralight 3-9x33 in lapped Burris extra low rings, mounted on a modified Weaver #62 base, it tips the digital scale at 6lbs-7oz!!  Wayne didn't cut the throat as deep as I thought he would, the 130gr Berger VLD is just off the lands at 2.795", so that's will be what I shoot em at.  ;)
