Bullet molds for .475 Mod 83
« on: March 03, 2010, 05:40:23 PM »
A question for you bullet casters. I've got the RCBS 400 gr. mold but will have to crimp over the front driving band which will probably work just fine but I'm wondering what molds you folks might be using. It looks like LBT is about the only other choice besides RCBS and Lee. I'm thinking about the LBT 385 gr. gascheck but would like to know what's working for you guys. Thanks.

my favorite is the ballistic cast 420 lfngc. it has a nose short enough for the fa guns and is probably the most accurate all around bullet ive found in the 475. there costly molds but no more costly then a lbt and there made of steel and will hold up forever and are a work of art. Probably the nicest mold made by anyone ever.

Lloyd, I've read several post from you where you speak warmly of the Ballisti-cast molds. It made me curious, so I figured I should buy one. I have several molds from LBT and they are for sure fine molds, but like you, I'm starting to really like iron molds. They are easier to keep at the right temp, and rejection rate seems to be lower than with aluminum molds. What I like about the LBT aluminum molds though, is the sprue plate and that they are light. And the bullet designs of course. A 4+ cavity iron mold sure is heavy to cast with for longer periods of time, so I'm going for a 2 cavity this time. Can you decide exactly what bullet weight, diameter, nose length etc. you want with the BC molds? I'm having some trouble figuring out their bullet charts.

I went on both the NEI and LBT websites today and didn't think either one is real easy to navigate or understand. They may make some outstanding molds but sure could use a website makeover IMO.

probably the best route would be to give them a call and tell them what kind of gun your using it in and the weight and style your looking for. What i like to do with there molds is get a 3 cav mold cut on a 4 cav block with two plain bases on the outside and a gas check on the inside. that way when i cast i cast it either as a 2 cav plain base or a single cav gc mold and it helps keep the mold from overheating when casting the really big bullets.
