.480 Ruger

I wanted to know if anybody here has any first hand knowledge of shooting a .480 Ruger. I want to get an encore and find a barrel chambered for it. What is the largest game you would use it on? How well does it seem to work. Any info good or bad will help. Thanks.

I have a super redhawk in 480 that I love to shoot. Have taken deer and very well out to 100yards or so (I dont scope that gun). I have not shot it in a TC but the round itself is fun to shoot and works great on deer!

I had an 12" Encore in 480. Buffalo will be no match. with the factory 325g jacketed take only broadside, 400g quatering is no problem. Now with 400g-440g Hardcast Bullets around 900-1200fps {Light Loads} you will easilly surpass the factory jacketed rounds with considerably less fuss. If you can hit @200yds this round will take them, learning trajectory, and practicing at that distance will allow that. Though handgun hunting is a close range encounter for myself, 50yds is far for me 75yds and I need a rest/bench.
A fine choice though, if you hunt'em close 420g WFN @ 900 fps will be great.

I shoot a Ruger SRH in 480 and like the round very much.  I have taken several deer, a wild boar and a cow elk with mine.  I would not hesitate to take a black bear with the round.  All I have shot through mine is a 325 grain JHP, I have acquired some other cast bullets and am planning on putting them through their paces this summer.  I have no doubt that they will perform equally well as the jacketed bullets.

I have a RH (bought here actually) that is pure wonderful. Downloaded it makes for a very fun and accurate 100yd plinking, fully loaded with the 400+g WFN-GC bullets it is a one shot stop on just about anything around here.

  I went out today and shot my 12" 480 encore barrel, the recoil surprised me , not as much as the SRH
that I used to have. The recoil of the 480 is even less than my 12" 45/70, but more than the 44 mag..  mc
