Hey Savage,
You are pretty quite out there.  When are you going out next?  It is pretty hot here.  The fish have moved deep and I'm just not a good deep water fisherman.

Zulu I would love to have a muskie story to tell.  That is a dedicated form of fishing - unless caught by accident.  We have a top notch muskie lake not to far away that the DNR has really cultivated.  If I wanted to go and be serious about it I would use a guide, at least once, just for the education.  Caught that nice pike last fall - that's about all I've got for a cold water fish story.  The old timers sometimes will talk about their annual trips up north to Canada that have always sounded like a hoot but I've never been.    Regards,    BT

As you know Florida gets ...HOT..... along about now and stays that way till mid fall so I`m kind of "off" the water for a while. That being said,I do go with my son
when ever we get the notion.  He`s a top notch bass fisherman  (has his own bass boat, with a 175 HP on it )  and makes a great partner!

Been doing my yard sale thing. Every friday and saturday and my question is always the same. You got any fishing gear for sale ?   Get a lot of no`s but every once in awhile I hit the jack-pot!
Went to an Estate sale last week and got an "old" center opening tackle box with 4 trays on one side and 3 on the other.  Big Boy and it was filled with some old wooden baits plus other lures and related gear.  Some of the old lures were still in there original package. All this stuff just adds to a lure/stuff collection I`ve been doing for many years.
Went to another one friday and got a new aluminum motor tote for $2. A 7 foot flipping stick (collapsing) for .25 cents.   Tip guide was missing.
Got it home, cleaned it up , installed a new tip  and bingo.....I got me another flipping stick.  Ok, I just added it to my  rod pile.
One last one.  Found an old Penn 710 (spinner)  in a pile of miscellaneous   stuff.
It looked like it had been through ther war.  Dirty, bail spring broken, Eccentric   parts missing,  Clanking and banging when you turned the handle.  Got it for $.25.
Took it apart this morning. Cleaned it up, took stock of the problems and for about
$4.35 in parts that puppy will be back in action, good as new.  You "know" I don`t
us spinners >ok, once in a while so this one will go in my reel pile.

I do pass on salt water fishing stuff and I see a ton of that ....no interest.

    BT.............eat your heart out!!   ;D

Savage,
It does sound like you hit the jackpot at your yard sales.
I don't know how to fix that stuff.  My talents are in woodwork and metalwork.  If my rod looses a tip, I have to go buy a new rod. :-\
Carolina rig is okay, but I really like casting to cover.  Its just not practical for more than about 1 or 2 hours after dawn because of the heat.  Floating around in 25 feet of water just casting is boring. :P

Savage,
While I do know what a carolina rig is, I have actually never used one.  What I use is a weedless #5 hook with a slip bullet weight in 1/8 or 1/4 oz.  If I have to go deep, I will switch to a 3/8 oz weight.
Do you think this makes any significant difference?
The weight is riding right on top of my worm or lizard.  I have to admit that while I have caught fish this way, I have never killed them in deep water.
I want to be able to catch bass so badly I can't stand it. ???  I work hard for every fish I catch.  And I have bass fished for 42 years.
I guess what I really need to do is open the wallet and spring for a guide that will show me what I need to do.  It just stinks to have to pay $400 or so for that.
I'm coming to the Saint John's River to let you show me what to do. ;D

Zulu:

You really need to expand your play book  because it looks me your to one dimensional. That`s fine to a point but to get better you need to expand your
abilities.  Re-read your last 2 posts ref:carolina rigs.  You know what a caroline rig is but have "never used one"and......and it`s not practical.   Do you know how many "T`s" have been won using that tactic ?   Plenty!
I think one major problem you have is you just don`t want to get off your comfort zone. Maybe your not the kind of guy that  likes change, even if it makes you much better. I`m not trying to be mean or anything but more like getting you to see there is a lot more to bass fishing than "casting" to cover. I`ve tried this on you before
but you dig your heels in and flat refuse to try something new. Forget the cost.
Everybody that fishes has to up-grade every once in a while.  That includes tackle
and technique. Maybe the time has come for you to accept the challenge as well.

You said," I want to be able to catch bass so badly I can`t stand it  ???."
You can do it!   But you`ve got to change!!   Commit to getting better ........

Your "carolina-rig"  sure sounds like a  Texas rig to me and yes, weight does matter.

Here` a thought.    If your interested, send me an e-mail (it`s listed)  and maybe I can prod you some more about the vertues of stepping out side your comfort zone  (casting to cover)
and into the expanded world bass fishing . Your the one that wants to catch Mr Bass so badly.................There`s the offer. :)

By the way......The back seat in my boat is always open, especially for a Cannon junky. ;D

Went out today to Lake Somerville.  On the water at first light .  Almost immediately picked up a 1 3/4 lb bass on a chugger - popper type thing.  Had it hit when I was on the fast retreive.  Then caught a 1 1/2 lb catfish on a Pet Spoon ???
That was it for the day.  Couldn't get anything else to hit.  Tried Rapalas, 8" lizards on the bottom, Rattletraps, and Chatterbaits.
Fished along the rocks at dawn in 3 to 6 feet of water then moved to 15' in an old sunken pond.  Tried a creek channel in 16' and an 8' hump that rose out of 20' of water.
95 degrees by noon.  Pulled the boat out of the water and went home.

When we were out yesterday, we were crossing the lake and I saw some guy about 300 yards off standing in his boat waving both arms at me.  We slowed down and went over there.  He was broken down and asked for a tow to the ramp about 3/4 mile away.
I wasn't sure if it was strong enough but the only place I had to tie him to was one of the rear trailer tie down loops.  I wasn't going to tie to a cleat but he did on his boat.  I just idled across the lake and it worked fine but I was worried.
Does anyone know if the rear trailer tie down loops are strong enough to tow with?  There is no other place.  It obviously would have been stronger if I had rigged a V shaped harness and pulled from both loops but I didn't.

Zulu,  I'm sure he appreciated your help.  You're are probably right with using both tie downs but I've never had to use them that way before and don't really know.
Kudos on a good job!  Regards,   BT

Hey,
Good luck.  We are into the dog days of Summer.  It was 99 degrees here yesterday  :P
I am going with a friend on Friday to North Padre Island.  He has a jeep and we are going to drive the 55 miles down the beach to the Port Mansfield cut.  Spend the night on the beach and drive back.  You have to drive the whole way on the beach.  There are no roads.
Trout and redfish are in the surf now.  Maybe I'll catch a fish. ;D

Zulu,  You are right.

Went out last night at sundown.  Fished an offshore jagged slope that runs for several hundred yards.  Tried a spinner bait, buzzbait and a medium depth crankbait casting deep and working it back to the 5-6 ft range.  The other stuff I fished primarily in the3-6 ft range over weeds.  Switched to a junebug trick worm and kept fishing parallel to the slope the boat in 6 ft casting all around.  Got a 2lb 14oz LM/18" long and then a 3lb/18.5"long before dark.  Caught a few more on a jitterbug and trick worm.  The pic's are dark, the camera battery was low and I've never posted pic's before; i'll look at it and see what I can do.  I also realized when taking them my arms are not long enough to hold the fish and take pic's of the fish on the scales.  Next time I'll have to hang them off of the dock railing and shoot them.  Regards,  BT

Got back from Padre Island last night.  It was a long trip. :P  It took 4 hours to go the 55 miles down the beach. :o  Sand was very soft but my friends Jeep did well.  I fished the surf for two hours before dark and only one hour at dawn.  We spent the night on the beach.  The surf beat the hell out of me.  I guess I'm getting too old to stand in 3 to 4 feet of water and take the waves. :o  I caught about eight 20" Ladyfish on a top water plug.  They fight hard and jump 4' to 6' out of the water.  The only big hit I got was a monster that was too large for my bass rod I was using.  Whatever it was hit my topwater plug and headed for Mexico!!! :o  It almost spooled me when I decided to put some thumb pressure on my spool to see if I could turn the fish.  That's when my 20 pound braided line snapped.  Oh well!  The one that got away!! :-\
The waves were beating me so badly I quit fishing.
Then we drove the 55 miles back out. :P  Another rough ride.  Altogether we spent 18 hours in a Jeep with no windows in a total of 34 hours.  I'm glad I'm out of that Jeep! :P
Otherwise I can now say I drove down Padre Island to Mansfield cut.  Not many people can say that. ;D

Hey Zulu,     Sounds like a good time other than the driving.  Makes you wonder what hit your lure out there?  I've never fished the surf but I've heard it can be brutal.  Does the full moon have any effect on the surf?  Times like that can be enjoyable but I now tend to need time to recover afterwards.  BT

Went out last night on a public but residential lake.  Put in about 7:30.  Caught nine bass swimming a june bug trick worm, tried different things but they wanted the trickie worm.  It was a little surreal as the pontoons were were out to watch the fireworks; the noise was tremendous for a little 59 acre 10mph fishing lake.  I had my shooting muffs on to mute the works they were shooting over the water.  I've fished on the 4th before but this was the first time surrounded by houses and I just didn't think about the rest of it.  No real size on the bass but it was still fishing.  The bite fell off about 10:30 and I came in.  If you are in to the tables next Sunday is supposed to be a good one.  Regards.   BT
