What's your best fishing story with your Dad?
About 5 years ago when my dad was 75, two of my brothers and I took him on a fishing trip to Rollover Pass.  We were fishing at night off the bulkhead there.  We were using our fresh water rods as we didn't have heavier stuff at the time.  My Dad had a bass rod (spinning gear of course ;D) with 12 lb. test on it.  We had been fishing for a while when he said "I'm hung up on the bottom".  I took his rod to see if I could get it unstuck.  When I pulled on it, it pulled back hard!  Real hard!! :o  I yelled you're not hung up, you have a monster on here! :o
I gave him back the rod and he started reeling in like a madman.  We were all yelling at him to slow down cause he only had 12 lb. test.  But he just kept cranking as hard as he could.  There was a crowd out there that night and everyone was watching and shouting advice.
He just kept cranking!!!  Somehow the line held and a giant black drum surfaced at the bulkhead.  We scooped it up with the net.  My Dad was grinning ear to ear and the crowd was all clapping and yelling congratulations.
35 lbs. :o :o
Just one of many stories.  Aren't they fun?

Actually, I went out today.
On the water at first light.  For once, the wind was down for a few hours.  Shad are still running the bulkheads.  Caught some in the cast net and immediatly got into a 4 lb. 4 oz. striped bass under a cork.  I've never had a black bass take as long to land as a striper.  It was fun. ;D  Caught 3 more nice catfish and the bite just shut down! ???  decided to try for black bass and spent the next 4 hours casting.  Nothing ???  No hits no nothing.  Wife got skunked. :'(
Wind came down hard and we pulled the boat out of the water.
Still, had a good time.

You said," spent the next 4 hours casting. Nothing ??? "   No suprise there.   Your a cat-fisherman!
Stick with what you do best............    ;D

One thing you did get correct and that was, a striper (most any size) will out pull a bass any day of the
week!  We`ve got them in the St John`s and those puppies will give you a work out.

Thought of you yesterday as I bought a spinning rod ( at a garage sale) for $.25 cents.  It had 3 broken guides but everything else was a-ok.  I`ve got guides for it and by next week it will be back in shape. It`s a 6"-6in.  Ugly Stik.
Maybe I`ll put a cheap reel on with with some store string, A large plastic cork and a rusty hook and call it.............. The Zulu Premium Series, cat fish rod!    :D

I really did buy the rod!!

Zulu,  Went out yesterday. Water was 60-63 deg's.  Cold front had passed through night before.  Caught 1 on a buzzbait, 1 on a jig and pig type setup and missed a couple more hits on it and a 2lb'er on a bama craw trick worm texas rig, weightless with a 1/0 light gamacatsoup worm hook - that trick worm is a thrill.  Had a zoom super speed trailer on the big jig - still learning that rig.  Weather was 50-65 deg's,  wind pushed me off in the afternoon.  We have had a long slow-to-warm spring.  Congrats on the nice striper and cat fish - do you eat the stripers?  How big were the cats?

While I enjoyed the times out with Dad and family there are no specific stories per se - just good times.

Tossed a big 1-7/8 oz jointed plug in deeper water for a bit and had either a nice pike or a big bass follow it to the boat - pike are known to follow so who knows.

BT,
One of the cats weighed 3 lbs. 6oz. and the other two were around 2 lbs.
Had the striper for dinner. ;D  My wife is a gourmet cook and she baked it.  It was great!

Zulu,  Very nice indeed and your wife is a gourmet cook to boot - You're a smart man.  I've heard different things and wanted your perspective on the stripers.  Add the cats and you have some good eating.

Went out today caught 5 dinks on a trick worm after throwing different stuff shallow and deep at them.  The five I got were in the warmest part of the lake (that I had found) 66.5 degs and shallow.  We had a high temp of 69 today.

Also found a bunch of fish 8-10' long under a big roadway culvert real shallow just swimming back and forth kinda crazy - totally un-interested in a lure.  I don't know what they were but they acted like they were in a bowl - wanted to get the net to look at one but...   Regards,   BT

A few days back I picked up an Ugly Stik, GSP-1166, 1MH at a garage sale for $.25.  The ceramic in the  tip guide was broken as were 3 more on the blank. It looked like crap!
Fast forward and it`s now back in original shape!  If I say so myself, I did a very nice job as that puppy looks great!  The only down side is it`s a......................... spinning rod.    :o
What a waste. Maybe I`ll use it to beat off gators........ Lousy spinning rod!
looked it up and found it sells for $39.95.  I`d say I did good!   :)

I'd say you did good too.  Do you fix all your rods?  I've never tried it.  I have several that need a guide replacement.

I just finished two very cool ammunition chests.  Go to the woodworking forum to see progress pictures from start to finish.

I fix the ones that need fixing and build them from start to finish as well.  Also do rod/reel repair for a lot of guys.  Been doing that for years.

I`ll check out your ammo chests. Comments will follow.......you can rest assured on that!

Actually my vessel is under repair now, new motor pod coming and new deck. Not sure when I'll finish yet!

Went to a family reunion this weekend up in Caldwell, TX.  Lots of farm ponds around there.  Six of us went to a millionaire's ranch one of the cousins had access to.  We caught about 60 bass! :o  One of my cousins caught a 7 pounder. :o  There were many fish between 4 and 7 pounds.  I caught 9 and my biggest was 3 lbs.  But I had a great time! ::)
Sorry, no pictures.

Did my yard sale gig.       Found a couple of old baits (4) in there original box W/paper work (lures.)   At the moment they are resting in the old lure retirement

Funny, you always show pic`s of your cat-fish but when you hit the mother lode
in some guys pond(about 60 bass)  You come up with this lame, " sorry no pic`s."  Are you sure you just didn`t fall asleep under a big tree and dream about

This is where I went bass fishing last November.  It is the place I found the 10 lb. 5 oz. bass with the 1 lb. tilapia stuck in its throat that I posted pictures of a while back.
Now Mexican pirates are robbing fishermen while they are enjoying a day on the water.
I think this just plain sucks!

There was some stuff ref that in my local paper.   Nothing like a "sleeper-cell" of Somali  Pirates in your back yard.  Hard to get mad at these folks as they are only trying to make a living!  Nothing like running your own business.

You better think twice about calling them.........Mexican Pirates!  You surely don`t want to offend anyone.  Next thing you know there will be hundreds of "Pirates"
protesting around your Cannon Factory. Come to think of it, if they bring the 500 piece Mariachi Band, it will seem more like a ...........fiesta!! :D :D

Eat. Drink. Enjoy............ After the party, they`ll blow up your barge (Ranger)!!!! ;D :D ;)
