1/3 scale 1835 Mountain Cannon

I decided that I needed a cannon ;D

I am making a 1/3 scale (actually 37%, to fit golf balls) of a 1835, 12 lb Mountain Howitzer.   I will build a full scale someday but for now this will do.


Raw stock.  If I remember correctly its 1144 stressproof. Should be plenty strong enough considering these were originally made of bronze.

Roughing in area for cascabel



Turning taper on breech end.  Had to bust out the long forgotten trig to get the angle ;)



Cascabel turned.  My ball turning attachment would not fit this lathe.  I did it freehand and cleaned up the mess with a file

     Welcome to the board, Cavalry!  Thanks very much for showing your 'in-process' pics, and very nice ones at that.  Will your howitzer have a reduced diameter chamber?  And do you plan on making a wooden, field gun carriage for it?

As I recall, Buford's calvary had artillery with them at Gettysburg.  So our friend here just decided to start with the cannon...the horse will come later.  ;D

Yup! I believe you're correct Brokenpole. His horse cavalry opened the battle with the first round if I'm not mistaken; though I'm not a student of the War of Rebellion, considering my GGFather was in the artillery.

Yes it has a reduced chamber.  I found some prints for the real deal and reduced every dim by 37%  For right now I want to throw some balls.  I plan on making something along the lines of a wheel less naval carriage.

Its the granddaddy of my shop.  Walcott 18x120.  Probably 1910-20 vintage.  She is still pretty tight though.  I can hold .001" in 24" easily.  I purchased it for scrap prices a few years ago.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Decided I better finish this up and make some noise ;)

tuning major of trunnions. The only 1.5" I had was 41l30, so I decided not to use that. Excess turning was required.

Welded. I preheated it to 400, welded, post heated and burried in kitty litter for a few hours for a slow cool. Dont critique my shoddy welding too much. A new machine and not enough hours running it.

I undercut the trunnion side pretty bad.  Certainly not my best weld ever.  My new machine has more adjustments than I know what to do with  :-\.

Mostly done. Shot some 'balls today. I was certainly amused.  I have no clue where they ended up. I guess when I find them I will know its range!

When I get time I want to pull it back apart, stamp the tube, parkerize and put a few more coats of tung oil on the wood.
