NEW SAVAGE 93V 17 HMR
« on: March 05, 2010, 03:44:19 PM »
Hi guys,
Just wanted to tell everyone how impressed I am with my new savage. The snow is still knee deep here in MN. so I walked a can out about 50 yds last night after work and loaded up a clip for the 17's first try. I normaly dont sight in this way but this winter has been a bear!! Anyway I dialed the new sightron 3x9 up to 6 power and tryed a shot off the hood of my truck, seen it went about 3" left , made adujustment and by nothing but luck put the next one in the middle of the can! The next 3 shots are what amazed me. Off the hood of my truck in my yard standing in snow colder than crap all of them were in one raged hole!! 45 years of shooting I have never had a gun shoot like that out of the box. One other thing the accu trigger may be one of the best invetions yet for a rimfire!   Mark

I put a 4-16X40 Centerpoint with AO on the rifle and boresighted it in. Was busy this PM, modifying my portable shooting bench so I can go to my woods or my buddy's gravel pit this week to finish the job. It is a V (bull barrel) model.
I have a Centerpoint 3-9X32 w/ 50 yd parallax, on another rifle (.22LR) that has performed well, so I hope this combo works well.

BTW: I already have a .17 HMR by NEF...and it likes the Hornady V-max best of all, but we'll see where Savage leads us.

The gun club I belong to has rimfire matches and a seperate class for the 17 caliber, I was using a 22mag but got this 17HMR and plan to try it at the next shoot. maybe shoot both classes, I saw an ad for a  BSA Sweet 17 6-18x40 scope and was wondering if anyone has used one of these? it's supposed to be set up especally for the 17HMR caliber.. is it any good????  ???

I have had the chance to do some plinking since my last post and all I can say is WOW!! I was not ready for the performance of this .17 cal. It is flat as a pancake to 100yds. and only about 6" low at 200 when sighted in 1 1/2" high at 100. This is the most fun I have had with a rifle in a long time. The 3x9 sightron is supper clear but is missing the A.O. that close shots requier. I have found the HYD V-MAX is the most accurate with the 20gr game points a close second. That 20 gr. penatrates a lot better though !!! A coyote had the chance to find that out this morning on the way to work at about 125 yds. and he never moved DRT. I must also say that this is a great sight !! Lots of info that helped me make my decision on a rifle.  Talk to ya latter, Mark

Glad to hear you collected the coyote this morning, but don't leave us wondering ! Yes, about 125 yards..but where did you hit him and what ammo were you using ?

I was shooting the 20 gr gamepoints . The slug took him right beteeen the front of the shoulder and the briscut quartering at me ! One of my favorite shots with a center fire little pelt damage as the slug stays inside and they dont move from where you pull the trigger!! I was concerned that the 17 wouldn't have the punch to get the job done at that angle but it was what I had along at the time . The coyote answered my questions as he never made a step!!! Mark

One of my favorite guns! Mine has a SS "bull" barrel and wears a Banner "Dusk-to-Dawn" 3X9X40 with a "circle X reticule. My model shoots the 17gr Hornady ammo the best.

Hey Ironglow,

I'm generally an exclusive Leupold guy, but I have to give credit when it's due and I've NO complaints on the Weavers that I own.  I've also put a 3x9AO rimfire on my 10/22.  I was concerned that it would be a cheap scope but the only difference in it and the other scopes is that it's parallax adjustable to 75yrds and has the AO.  Anyway....I love my 17 rim....I had a ruger and messed with it constantly.  It would shoot 3/4" groups, it would NOT shoot them anywhere near the bullseye...no matter how much I adjusted the scope...long boring story and it's history.

I have a BSA 6 X 18 X 40 scope on my Marlin 917 VS but it not a Sweet 17. Bought it because it was the only one I could find in silver finish to match the rifle. It's a little earlier model than the 17. It's OK up to 12 power but gets very dark above that. Maybe the Sweet 17 doesn't do that but I would check it out before I bought one.

thanks guys, I really like this rifle. I have another one like it only in 22 Mag with the plain stock and in blue. decided to spend a little more and try a thumbhole stock and SS in the 17HMR. it feels good if you know what I mean , now if it shoots as good as it looks and feels I'll be a happy camper.. ;D

Just a quick up date! After a couple of weeks I can say with out a dought this 17 hmr savage is one of the best rifles I have ever bought and I have everthing from $200 rifles to $1000 rifles --40 some at last count !! I took a crow out of a tree today with a 20 mph wind at my back at 100 yds + . The damn thing literaly flew backwards when that little slug hit him at that distance. Now I can see why the coyote I shot a couple of weeks ago laid right their ! The power that this little slug has is awesome ! I cant seem to grab any thing else out of the gun safe !! Mark

I am a lifelong groundhog hunter, and the last few years I have taken to photographing my first kill of the season. This year it was with my new Savage .17 HMR with bull barrel. See photo below. It was a heart shot at 100 yards..CCI..TNT 17 gr HP. I have an NEF in .17 HMR and from the groundhogs I have shot, I like the V-max bullets best. This chuck had the bullet pass clean through, a  .17 hole in front, about a .20 hole out the back. On something groundhog size, the V-max tends to explode inside.

I have never owned a .17 HMR and purchased a Savage 93R17 a few weeks ago.  I am really impressed.  I put a 3-9 Bushnell on it and was lucky as the scope was almost right on and it did not take long to sight it in.   The 25-27th group was just over one inch at 100yds.  After shooting 30 rounds I went home and was anxious to see how much copper fouling I had with a new barrel.   All I saw was a tinge of blue on the patch and the second was clean.
I use a .204 on most varmits but will now use the .17 while the .204 is cooling off in Western Kansas dog towns.
