I've heard that everyone on the 44 barrel cannon crew was no higher than 3'-4" for obvious reasons.   ;D

If memory is correct, seems like some of us saw all kinds of cool things at that museum years ago. I'll see if i can find the pic of that cool tripod mortar.

The rotary mortar is perplexing ...... ???
If they shoot @ 45 degrees , what keeps the balls and charges in place ? Patched tight fit ?
Looks more like a rotary Holocaust machine .  :-\

Maybe a rotating seat in the middle?

Might be the first time that you would see the sign, you can't be any taller than this (appropriate signage) to operate this cannon.

I understand it is a wheel that rotates on an axle and as each chamber passes a single point, the primer for a single barrel is ignited. Otherwise, it would be like a 4th of July pinwheel. You know the 4th of July. Our "traditional" day that is identified with "George Washington".

You know the 4th of July.

Yeah, otherwise known as Independence Day, but most young people weren't taught that.

I think most of them are too dependent today, expecting someone else to provide all the necessities while they work to provide only entertainment.  Witness the riots at Berkeley last week where, supposedly, study only the "best and brightest."

Back in 1973 we walked the decks of a ship in England . It was the one Lord Nelson met his waterloo ?

The heigth between decks was quite short .
I was 6' at the time and could only stand upright between the decks beams .  They pointed out the corner of the ship where LN died during the battle .
When the tour guide asked , "any questions ? "  I asked how did they manage to move about the decks with out knocking ones self out let alone reload and shoot . ?
answer ....."Average crew man was 5' tall".
Interesting  fact I never realized .

Southpaw; here's your answer. I had to use a chart last week to determine the height of a carriage from a painting with some Europeans standing next to it. English in the early 18th c. were 5'5".

... how tall was George Washington on horseback?

Don't know if this is a gimmick question (he was just as tall on a horse as he was standing on the ground) or if you are asking how high was the top of his head while sitting on a horse (obviously depends on the size of the horse.)  Judging from myself (6' 2" tall), the top of his head would be about 37" above the back of the horse plus the thickness of the saddle, etc.  Plus or minus about 8', depending on the horse.

Yes.  But there MIGHT be a third.

I taught HS in Littleton for a year MANY years ago when I got off active duty.  Schools were off for a WEEK to celebrate.  Littleton - Acton - Concord/Lexington.  Just a few miles apart.
