glass on a ruger .44 carbine
« on: March 06, 2010, 06:59:19 AM »
I picked up a pre-warning ruger .44 carbine, factory peep sights. I am considering putting a 1to 1,5 power red dot glass on it, but am afraid that would make it rather
ugly.  Any opinions?

since you asked for opinions I'll give you mine  ;D I put one on mine and didn't like the looks of it, didn't go well with the lines ,but my stock was a finger groove stock. It might look better on the carbine style stocks.I took it off and went with a period correct Weaver scope. looks a lot better to me......... If it was mine I would stick with the peep sights.

Hey, it's whatever works for you. On my Ruger 44 Carbines I have low power scopes. One has a 2 1/2x & the other has a 3x Lyman All American w/ post. This works best for me for what & where I hunt.

oral36,

I've got a Weaver Grand Slam 4.75 x 40 fixed power scope on mine. This has worked well for me. Since I have a Weaver 2-pc mount on mine, I am also probably going to buy either an XS Systems or NECG peep site, so I can swap from scope to peep sights when I want.  However, only you can decide what you ultimately put on your carbine. If you like the red dot sight, go for it. You are the only person you have to please.

Enjoy your carbine. I know I have.

Man wish the 44 carbine I picked up this week had a peep, mine has the cheap flop down open sight on the barrel like my 96/22WMR carbine. I scoped the 96 and may do same with the little 44 auto carbine, but would rather have peep sight.

The peep is nice. Mine has see thru mounts and an old redfield wide field 3x9 on top. It shoots 240 rem. JHP green box with shots touching most groups. Has accounted for several nice bucks . I use it where a short shot <100 yd. or so is expected. Very handy little rifle.

May I suggest a skinner barrel mounted peep? www.skinnersights.com I think.
Inexpensive and dead eye accurate. Would look nice on that carbine I bet. I like the one on my marlin. At 50 yards my 44 mag 1894 will put 10 shots in a 5" circle shooting offhand. And that is a feat for me! Lol

I am putting a shotgun scope on the H&R .44.  I guess that the
gun will not kick hard enough to mess up a scope designed for 3.5 inch 12 ga laods.

I put a 1.5-4.5x variable shotgun scope on my early-model, O/S Ruger .44 magnum Carbine and it works just fine and looks good on the little carbine.

It has heavy crosshairs trimming down to very fine crosshairs at a central circle in the middle of the scope's internal view.  That circle represents a width of 6-inches at 40 yards which not only causes one's eye to automatically "center" anything in the scope in that circle... and serves as a distance-judging, range-finding mechanism for determing the distance to the target.
