Duracoat
« on: March 06, 2010, 03:48:18 PM »
Has anyone tried the Duracoat process and how well does it work? I've heard that D-coat over zinc parkerizing was the way to go and it is very tough. Anybody have any experience with it?

I'm debating on finishes on my new mauser project. Parkerizing, Duracoat, or just send it out and have it blued. I already have a set-up for parkerizing, and may go ahead with the Dura-coat, but then again nothing beats the look of good blue. I have always wanted a "stainless" look also, and may think about matte nickel plating. Duracoat comes in SS finish also. What do you guys think?

You want to paint a nice classic Mauser?  If you want to do that just go to the hardware store and buy a rattle can of silver.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

the product is easy to use and preforms as advertised. I have used it on several projects both for myself and friends everyone likes the results. easy applied with a air brush. their gun blue color is a pretty close match to real blue and you can fill pits with it if your project has lead a hard life.( Mix a small amount, Just a few drops, put enough on with a small brush or toothpick to fill the pit sand smooth the next day and paint.)

Just debating on finishes that I can do myself. I will most likely send it out and have it blued. The only problem is, I don't have anyone local to do it and will have to mail order. From what I've read the Duracoat is a bake-on finish and a great alternative which gives a very durable, corrosion resistant gun finish. This is my first mauser project(and definitely not my last one) and I'm not building a super fine custom sporter, just a economical hunting rifle a little better than a "truck gun".

I had a Remington 7600 Duracoated professionally (possible that it was another 'coat like Ceramcote or Molycoat but the same idea).

Pluses are that it doesn't need a lot of attention, got the shade I wanted and a matt finish.
Minuses are that it shows every twig rub and surface marks relatively easily with oils from your hand or whatever.  Also it is scratchable with stone or other metal (beltbuckles) right through to raw metal.

I would never do it again, I regret it everytime I pick up that rifle because it didn't need to be refinished -just something I thought would be more functional.  I would get a gun reblued or parkerized rather than painted anyday...
