Pardner opens while cocked????
« on: March 06, 2010, 05:50:28 PM »
So what is the likely suspect?  I haven't opened one up in a while.  It's my new pawn shop gun I should have checked that while I was there.

Something is broken, worn or missing.

Already came to that conclusion.  I got to looking closer and I can tell one of the pins wasn't seated all the way.  So I know someone has opened it up before.  Some probably put it together wrong.  It doesn't look to have seen too much use.

Check the link I left, you'll need to open it up and see what's wrong, it may be the latch release is installed wrong or broken, just guessing, I have over 40 H&Rs, never had that problem.

Tore it down.  The inside looks good.  No broken or worn parts.  It was put together right.  I think a part could be made wrong though.  The stud on the side of the hammer that the spring engages also stops the barrel release lever from being depressed while cocked.  This one never engages.  All my other handi's are at my parents so I can't confirm this.  I would like to fix it but if it cost any money I'll just use it as is.

You can order a new hammer from Brownell's or Numrich for about $10 and shipping if you want to fix it.

Do you think that will solve my problem?  It is either that or the barrel release lever is made too short.  There is a tang that points down in the receiver coming off of the barrel release lever.  That is the only purpose that I can see for it.

I finally removed the transfer bar.  I discovered the spring on the transfer bar was in the wrong notch. Now the latch retracts to the proper position I think.  However, it will still open while cocked. I think refitting the barrel may fix the problem.  Any thoughts?  I smoked the latch shelf and I'm only getting about 1/16" of engagement all the way across.

I tried to work the shelf a little to give it a little more engagement.  It seemed to help some but not much.  I'm going to email H&R today and see how much to have it fixed properly.  If its too expensive I'll just use it as it.

Called H&R this morning.  Even though it is out of warranty they will look at it at no charge.  They will call with an estimate before fixing it.  I believe it should only cost about $30 or so.  I may get another barrel while I'm at it if they have some.

Ilion will likely just repair no charge it if you order an accessory barrel.  ;)
