rinfire barrel on a shotgun?
« on: March 07, 2010, 08:20:34 AM »
hello everyone,
Im not sure if this is the right place to post this so feel free to move or delete as needed.
My son was given a NEF/H&R 20 gauge shotgun by my father in law. It came with 2 barrels, full and improved? choke. I took him to the range to teach him to shoot and he didnt like it, too loud, recoil is a bit much. Anyhow, he shot my 22 Browning and loved it and now wants his own.
The question I have is, can I get a 22 LR barrel from H&R for the 20Gauge receiver? Also, is it possible to get a youth stock for the same?
If needed I can add the serial number if it helps, it starts with NW-SB1.
                                                           Thanks, Dave

No. You would need a "versa-pak" barrel, which has an offset barrel to line up the rim of a rimfire cartridge with the centered firing pin of the receiver.  VP's have been discontinued by H&R, but you might find one "out there" somewhere.  They show up here periodically for about the $100-125 range.

Most stocks fit most frames, and youth stocks are available from H&R or from the classifieds here.

There is great information on both of these topics in the FAQs in this section.

Dave, since the Versa Pak barrels are relatively uncommon, I suggest you consider an entire rimfire Sportster which go for less than $150 - here's the cheapest I saw when I googled http://www.hyattgunstore.com/product.php?productid=18349  Walmart had 'em for around $120 recently, and they show up on the classifieds here at GBO from time to time.

I started both my kids with .22LR Sportsters with youth stocks. They are now grown up enough for adult stocks. Stocks are easily interchangeable and you can buy a rifle with adult stocks if none available with youth stocks, keep the adult for a couple of years down the road, and in the meantime put on a youth stock if it fits your son better.

Be careful though, you may find yourself wanting more and more of these fun rifles and shotguns as you get to know them... that's what happened to most of us on this forum!

And I support djw's suggestion to look through the FAQs at the top of the page, there is a pile of information there that will help you with any NEF/H&R you might decide on.

Cheers
Kerry

p.s. I just checked Bud's - Here's a Youth Sportster delivered for $141 http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/89110

Call your local Gander Mtn.  They still have quite a few floating around. I paid $129 for  mine in St. Paul area. They can locate them and have shipped to your home area with no extra fees. Am on the road for awhile otherwise I would stop by there see if they still had any left. It helps to go in on a weekday and get the young kid on the computer to check there stock. They are always happy play on computer while working ;D    3leg
