OFF TOPIC
« on: March 07, 2010, 11:58:46 AM »
Greetings,

I know this is not a handgun question, but there are folks here whose opinion I respect, and I don't see any more suitable forum.

I have been watching the age-old debate about which is more intimidating - the sight of a double barrel shotgun or the sound of a pump being racked.

I hear "opinions" on both sides, but do not know of a reliable source IE: the bad guy's opinion.

Anybody care to comment?

 ??? ??? ???

My dad used to tell a story about his WW2 time in Sicily. He and a friend were in a cafe. Some tough looking guys came in. Dad racked the little 25 he carried - Dad never was into guns. Nobody noticed. His pal racked his Colts 1911. The place emptied right NOW. Dad and pal finished breakfast by themselves.

This reminds me of an incident that took place during my childhood.  We had neighbors across the street from us that could be a little inconsiderate at times.  We had politely asked our neighbors to refrain from parking across the street directly behind our driveway during winter storms because when the plows came threw to clear the roads they would have to swerve around the parked vehicle and inevitably dump a mound of snow at the end of our driveway blocking it.  We requested that they ask their guest to do likewise.  Well one snowy evening said neighbors had an all night poker party and one of their guest parked at the end of our drive and of course when the plows came threw early in the evening they piled up a huge mound of snow at the end of our drive.  My older sister got out the snow blower and relocated this mound of snow on and around the car at the end of our drive and we all went to bed.  Some time in the early hours of the next morning the party broke up and the owner of the vehicle (probably somewhat inebriated) apparently was unhappy to find that his car had been berried and proceeded to pound on our back door while spewing some colorful language.  Mom and dad's bedroom was on the second floor in the back of the house next to mine.  Upon hearing the commotion dad gets out of bed, grabs a broom with a shinny metal handle, pokes it out his bedroom window and shouts out "Hey You! If you pound on that door one more time I'm going to blow your (expletive) head off!"  I don't believe I've ever seen anyone prior to or since then run so fast on snow and ice.  :D

The sight of a double barrel is a show stopper.
especially a real short one. Other things can sound
like a pump shotgun, Nothing looks like a double
but a double.

AMEN!!!!
That's why I was wondering about the intimidation factor - just might prevent having to pull the trigger!
Lots less legal issues that way, but you are correct, you have to be ready at that point.

Yep, once the firearms come out, its over! you better be ready to shoot and have the nerve to shoot, or you may be carried by six! But if you do you may be judged by twelve.
Then again its better to be judged by 12 than carried by six.

Taking a gun out for show will draw the line and jacking a 1911 or whatever may seal your fate!

when i go hunting or fishing i aways have a big knife, Heavy Machete,Slimline Machete or some blade on me.  One time i was on the beach night shark fishing and 6 teens came up to me and kept asking if i had any cash on me. Then one of them start picking up me stuff and was trying walk off with it and the others had pick up some wood that was on the beach.  when i got up they saw the Compact Axe on the right side of my belt and the 14" Bowie on my left side. My hand was on the  Bowie and they drop my stuff and were like be cool man we were playing and stuff like that.

Being  armed is more intimidating then your hands anyday. Be it swords, uzi, handgun , shotgun ,  or anything.  I can't tell you how many times just haveing a mean looking pocket knife has change peoples minds about what they were going to do. ;D

The sound of a pump shot gun only gives your position away if the other guy is armed . Its an arwful feeling to have just gone John Wayne pumping your gun and only hear slince when finished . Then what do you do ? Every one in range has you in their sights . lonely in spades !
Now a double bbl pointing at you , yea a picture is worth a thousand pumps .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

If things ever got to the point where I have to rack the Mossburg 500 the "clack, clack" would be followed very shortly by "BOOM!".

I won't want to be in front of either type shotgun, nor do I expect would anyother sane person.  For the other type of person, they would surely find out why it's not good to be infront of a shotgun.

Are those who break in sane ? And they ain't always in front , my main reason for not liking a light on my gun as it can draw fire from the side  ;)
