45 120 conversion question
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:35:41 AM »
Hi All,

Has anybody done this conversion on the standard Handi 45 70 barrel (22")?  It seems the conversions I have seen are done on the BC 32" barrel.  Does the shorter barrel defeat the purpose of the larger case when using BP or in my case BH209?  I shoot up to 120 grains (volume not weight) of this blackpowder substitute in a 23" barrel MZ with very accurate results.  Western powder has published data for BH209 in the 45 120 but they don't indicate the gun or barrel length.

thanks

BB

I don't remember anyone saying they have a short barrelled 45-120.   :-\

If I were makin up a pure hunting rifle and were to be of a practical nature, I'd make me a 45-100 with a 26 - 28 inch barrel.  Certainly no shorter then 26 inches... Don't ask me why... old man's bias and purogative...    8)  Tim says I should do it... he's an instigator...  :(

The 22" barrel has a hard enough time burning 70grs of blackpowder..   An additional 50grs would just go to making a fireball, possibly netting you an additional few feet per second - not much though.

The way they used to get additional velocity with blackpowder was to make a bigger(longer) cartridges, which then needed a longer barrel to burn the additional powder.

Even using smokeless the 22" barrel, the 45-70 is capable of doing what the 45-120 can do.

Hodgdon lists 95gr T7 for the 45-120 under either bullet, they don't list the test barrel length tho, but they use a 24" barrel in their smokeless data.

Not necessarily true, take a look at the 405gr loads in the 26" barrel at AmmoGuide, he gets nearly 2400fps compared to Hodgdon's 2100fps 400gr bullet Modern rifle data which is done in a 24" barrel. http://ammoguide.com/?catid=680

There will always be exceptions to every rule.   Tinkering with powders can get you just about anything, or handi-cap you(pun intended).

Here is the 300gr and 350gr .45-120 with IMR4198 scale that you PM'd me a couple years ago.   Even with the massive .45-120, the 22" barrel handicaps it to the point where even a properly stoked 45-70 can do.

Unfortunately the short barrel doesn't do much for the capabilities of the 45-120, the 45-70 will do the same.

Here's the 300gr Rem at 40kpsi.

That's at a max pressure of 40kpsi, load them to equal pressures and the 120 has a definite advantage.  ;) The old adage of there's no replacement for displacement still holds true.  ;D The same weight bullet and the same powder loaded to the same pressure in the 45-70 will do 2138fps in a 24" barrel according to Hodgdon.

I don't remember anyone saying they have a short barrelled 45-120.   :-\

If it ain't been done then maybe that's the reason to do it.  This is going to be a paper puncher/fun range gun. ::)

Hey BB, How about a 'compomise' at 45-90? Way cheaper brass and still an attention getter at the range. I bet with either BP or smokeless you can get a nice balance of performance to barrel length and still have something different enough to give you visions of Africa, etc.

My .45-120 is 24".... and yes I'm getting some startling performance out of it, including a recent load of ar2209 behind a 405gn giving me over 5000 ft-ib.

I have a new project under way for a 22" barrel chambered in 499 Hubel Express, that is basically a .450 Nitro Express #2 necked up to .500.  The case is 3.56" long.... HUGE.  It achieves more energy at even lower pressures.

All smokeless. I've never used black or substitutes.

There was a fella selling in the " Encore Classifieds " a 45-100 that was 24".  Could possible pm him a question on performance.

Yah Jerry!  They say the second time around is much better!   :D

You never did answer that last PM I sent you about loads.   :-\  I'm not complaining though!  As bad as I am about returning emails, pm's and such...  :-[

Lots of fun with smoking powders!  Too many projects lately.  Unfortunately most are not rifle related.
I was going to go this same route second time around.  I was thinking the ultra hunter SS 45/70 was 26" and then found out it was 24" and changed my mind.  Probably not such a big  difference in smokeless loads.  I say go for it.  It would be very cool.
In fact I think a said I was thinking of something in a different flavor.  I was referring to the SS barrel.
