Williams Peep Sight
« on: March 08, 2010, 07:06:58 AM »
I have taken 6" off a 45-70 H&R and mounted a red dot.  I really like it but am thinking of putting a williams rear sight on the back and a post on the front.  I would appreciate any ideas on how to get a front post on, (clamp, band, locktite ? ? ?)  Actually I am also looking for a bladed(?) front post.
Thanks in advance,

blindhari

H&R has plain blade sights in several heights (maybe in the FAQs) which will require only one hole drilled/tapped to mount (easier and cheaper than a dovetail) and 'cleaner' looking if you remove it in the future.

~.625" is the correct height for a surface mounted front sight used with the WGRS on the 45-70, see PEEP and FIRESIGHTS in the FAQs, single hole mounting is probably the most practical.  ;)

blindhari, we'd really like to see a photo of a 45-70 chopped by 6 inches.  Personally, I'm wondering why you did that.  The thing I like most about my BC 45-70 is the long barrel.  I'm trying to imagine what a regular Handi barrel looks like after being shortened.   That said, I'm sure you did the right thing for your need.   Regards.

There are short barreled rifle pics in the 9 page FAQs thread Let's see some Handis, here's one of them.

I have used a dovetail file to create a dovetail for a full length tube magazine on a Marlin 1895. It takes a lot of patience and you must be exact as far as lining it up on the barrel. You could always use the barrel cut off for practice. Here's one from Wheeler Engineering: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=867943
Now here's a 27" barrel and a 16"!
