Butt stock coming loose ?
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:16:23 PM »
Does anyone else have a problem with their butt stock bolt working loose , I have 3 different rifles that every so often I have to pull the recoil pad and re-tighten the bolt and for the life of me I can't figger out why .  ???

I've used the little cupped washer , even blue Loc-Tite and even that only slows the process .

HELP -- Please  ;D

Probably with the weight of all those coats of paint you have gravity pulling off the stocks! LOL!!
Just for the heck of it why not try changing one of the bolts with a new one and see if that helps?

Don't have much in the way of help for ya stimpy, but yup, happens to me too. And it doesn't happen with all my stocks, just one wood, and one synth (on a Sportster). Haven't done anything special to avoid it. I just tighten 'em when necessary. It happens with the synth more often, so I suspect it has nothing to do with temp and humidity here in the Pacific NW. (And, now that I think of it, it was the same Sportster  when I lived in NM a few years back.) Maybe it's the metal flexing rather than the stock..?

Anyway, it's just something I figure I'll live with.  Hope ya get more help than I have to offer (i.e. none) ;D

... hey, Big Blue just might have hit on it - the weight of the paint changes the center of gravity ... or just plain keeps the stock bolt trembling with nervousness!  ;D ;D ;D

Add a lock washer. It won't come loose anymore.

Lockwasher, yes, if it is actually backing off. My guess is the threads on the 'butter bolt' are giving way under recoil. If you go to a grade 5 bolt it may stop that, but I wouldnt go to a grade 8 because you want the bolt (cheap) to give out before the receiver (expensive).
Sacrificial parts should always be the cheapest and easiest to replace if neccessary.
