Well I know we have to have a few "Artists" amongst the masses of mortar & cannon shooters......

Here is your chance to participate in designing a possible patch for the Almost annual 3rd New River Cannon & Mortar Cacoffiny.......

This is a rough sketch to give people some ideas  ;D (don't mind the spelling I did this at 4am)

The event is in July I think a last day in April for submissions and then let people vote on the best design for a two week window

in May this will give me plenty of time to make sure they get done.

A lot of good ideas in that drawing!

I'll toss out a few ideas.

Design should be colorful and simple.
(Simple so it can be easily seen/recongized from 15-20 feet away.)

Yo! Before youse guys put pencil to paper, there are points to consider. My experience with designing unit patches , taught me this:

1). Less is more.

You are not creating an illustration that is going to be hung on a wall like a framed painting. If as stated, it is to be recognizable from a distance,........think of military patches......Simple.

2). Quantity.

You are going to be required to have a minimum order.  Is this going to be a worthwhile endeavor?  Will you have the required number?

3). Colours.

The more colour you have, the higher the reproduction cost.

4). Size.

This is related to "Point #1".  Keep the detail down or you are going to create a blotch....not a patch.  Will it fit on a cap?  More people wear caps; less wear shooting jackets.

n.b.: If I were doing this, I'd choose to use black thread on a white or light-bright base fabric while working with simple design in outline only.

Ahhhh  yes.  Military patches.

Reminds me of when I was in ASA.

An eagle's claw clutching a bolt of lightning.

AND there was a jingle that went with it:

Black is for the night we fear,
Blue for the water we ne'er go near.
White is for the flag we fly,
Yellow is the reason why.
Red is for the blood we shed,
As you can see, there ain't no red.

So y'all/youse poets have an opportunity here!

Rough draft was to give people inspiration

I don't need no stinking quanities they will be made where I work so I decide the quanity.
3). Colours.

The more colour you have, the higher the reproduction cost.

Again not an issue within reason.[/b]

4). Size.

This is related to "Point #1".  Keep the detail down or you are going to create a blotch....not a patch.  Will it fit on a cap?  More people wear caps; less wear shooting jackets.

Gofuhvit!

I'll post a photo tonight of a patch I designed for my now defunct antique guns & parts company.

Now I shed no blood when I was in Viet Nam but I do know some who did who were ASA, so just remember there isn't any safe MOS or branch when there is a war going on.

It was an attitude.

Here is a dumb question but then...I work in nuclear plant how smart can I be.  ::)

Can those of us who aren't able to attend the event due to work schedule, distance, cost, wife won't let us...can we still purchase a patch?

That's a good idea.

WHEN we've come to concensus as to WHAT we're going to do, then (as it appears there is interest) we'll figure out how to make distribution.

THANKS!

Now we have an example of 'a' patch.  (Not the ASA I was in, but you get an "A" for taking a shot at it!)

Give me a little time, I think I could design something for this, as I have experience designing patches in the past and used to be a professional graphic artist:

This one was for a Peacekeeper ICBM test launch from Vandenberg:

And the logo I still use on freelance work:
"When all else fails, call for indirect fire on your position, AND GET THE HELL OUT!"

Good examples, one and all - thanks!

Now, if I were to put one to the front of MY hat (not yet purchased), how high and how wide should it be?  What shape?

p51, i really like that "DRAGON"

Here's one of my ideas for a slogan for a patch, and this can be used by everyone no matter where you live. If people can't make it to the New River Valley, Va. shoot, but they shoot a cannon or mortar and post the pictures from their area, they will be part of the "GREAT" shoot.

Thanks!  ;D I did that for a USAF Ground Launched Cruise Missile unit in the Netherlands when I was in the area. They wanted their weak-looking WW2 insignia changed but couldn’t do that without approval WAY up the food chain. They found a loophole that stated it could be changed on the squadron level as long as it used the original written description. So I turned a very badly drawn dragon into what I felt was a better looking one. The irony is that the INF treaty got signed soon afterward and killed the program. The squadron was disbanded soon afterward and I think less than ten of these patches were ever made, long after the fact.

Richard  -  THANKS.   Perhaps a few words of the history of them?

Richard sent me a couple of things related to artillary designs awards and such.
(And may well turn into awards or prizes for the 3rdAANRVM&CC - 2010.)

Pictures later this evening.

Something we could easily include in the design - the traditional crossed cannons.

That's what they are for; awards. I'm waiting to see who is going to be the "STAR" of the rendezvous and maybe a runner-up. I have a couple of other things in the works too. Wish I could be there but as I told you, 600 miles, hauling a trailer with an over-night on the way down and another on the way back home, looks like more than the wife and I can handle for for such a brief stay.  We would probably have to take Maeve, our 80 pound American Staffordshire Terrier too. She loves making friends and playing soccer.

I'm going to be real disappointed if the BBQ isn't the "STAR" of the rendezvous, with maybe the cookies as runner-up. ;D

We need to define the areas of competition in the next several months.

A few decades ago Scientific American held a nation-wide paper airplane making contest.  Full page add in the NY Times.  As I recall, they had half a dozen categories - as longest (time) flight, longest (distance) flight, oragami, etc.  BUT they awarded one more prize than they had the competition for.  Someone sent in a dollar-bill folded into  a paper airplane, with 'because it goes so fast'.  They awarded it the first prize for SPEED.

Somehow I don't think I'll be coming to this shoot. Republic of Kalifornia is a bit far away. At the cannon shoots we used to have they
started giving medals the last couple of years. Here is one:

The grid coordinates (for the BBQ) are posted; if you think you want to take a shot at it, we'll post the coordinates for the baloons.  Rotation of the earth against but the prevailing winds and the jet stream are with ya'.
