A perfect Quartet now (centerfires)
« on: March 09, 2010, 04:01:53 AM »
Most know I have had a real hard time of deciding on calibers lately for my Handi's.. :D I think I finally have it down to what will work for my current hunting areas and for what I want to get back to reloading for.

My perfect trio quartet is a custom 26" 30-06..a factory 30-30 and a factory 45-70 and 223

Thanks to Wayne York, Quick, and now pl270 I believe I honestly have reach a perfect trio quartet of Handi Rifles....I don't come to this easily, and have spent countless days rationalizing my choices to the point of not doing anything.. Today I am able to move forward and complete my self imposed limits while meeting all of my needs and staying in budget. While I am sure others have their own perfect combination of Handi's and some don't even believe in having such a small arsenal of barrels and complete guns  :D :D I have to keep my self in check and constantly do battle with this disease because financial, space, and time constraints now..I am sure there are others in my same situation that suffer daily as I do with this debilitating  Handiholicitism and to those I say..Yes...we can over come this and enjoy just a few of them.No longer do we need to continue searching out dusty corners of gun stores in hopes of finding another treasure. In these tough economic times we can know we are being financially responsible to our selves and families and can become better hunters and shooters since we no-longer have to be burdened by practicing with so many calibers...Ohh crap...my friend just called and he has just gotten in a like new  7-57 Handi.....I'll finish this up later...see ya ;) ;D :D

He speaketh herassy(wink), The perfect trio he was talking about got me thinking about the fact that I don't have any handi rim fire yet. might have to do something about that soon.

Since you qualified this as the Perfect Trio of CF I must ask,
what is your Perfect Trio of RF?
and P.T. of smoothbore?
ne plus ultra?
et cetera, ad naseum

A better question would be - what would be the perfect DOZEN? !!!   ;)

However, MY "3" would be:

In the west (where I live):  223, 270 (or 7-08), 35 Whelan  (I have the first 2...)

In the east: exchange the Whelan for a 45/70

Can't have too many handi's - just not possible!

Mike

Current Handi's: 17 HMR, 270 Ultra Comp, 223 Bull Barrel.
Barrel wish List: 22 Hornet, 7-08, 30-30, 357 Mag, 45 Long Colt for starters.   Oh, and 35 Whelen too!
Donations gladly accepted!!

I have no perfect trio of rim fires, and have never considered them a necessity for my hunting preferences. While I have owned many different types of rim fire rifles, only 1 has remained in my safe and that is an original single shot Stevens my Grandfather gave to my Father when he was just 3 years old some + - 90 years ago.

Smooth bores..I own 2 now...down from a couple dozen at one time when teaching and shooting league trap and sporting clays..The first is my mothers 1st wedding anniversary gift from my Father to her ( I know..I know..he was rabbit hunting when he gave it to her..used her to jump them and thought she would like her own gun..which she never did want) This one is a Mossberg 20 gauge bolt action with external Lyman choke tubes..The other is my 12 ga Parkerized 870 and Hastings slug barrel.. I no longer teach trap shooting or sporting clays but do still hunt with it.. There isn't a need for me to own more than what my trusty 870 can't do with either reloads or factory loads.. If I do succumb to the trap affliction again.. the 870 can do just as well..since I can get barrels and stocks for it..Sporting clays has evolved into more show than go if you know what I mean..much like the IBO circuit for archery which I once participated regularly ..and much like the skeet circuit I shot with as well..All about 1 up-man ship for equipment and over inflated egos...just like the bass fishing circuit did years ago..

I have no need for a dedicated varmint rig..since I only occasionally hunt coyotes..and if I go for hogs ( much bigger varmint to me ) any of my trio is more than adequate for the dispatching of them. at any range I want to hunt them......A dedicate bench gun..nope..If Wayne York will do as good a job as he did on my 338-06 A-Square..then I have no doubt my soon to be 26" 30-06 will be more than accurate enough for what ever informal postal match or local match I choose to shoot in. I have some very good 30 cal bullets waiting to load up just for this..and also for hunting as well. I would love to own a 24" bull barreled 308 though..and since this would have to be a full custom re-bore or re barrel/stub ..money precludes it from happening for a long while..If I ever do have him make one..It will be a  top of the line barrel and let him stub it for me..so.. I am happy with my selection..

I have 2 frames here..not just one..and to me this makes perfect sense to me..Can't and won't say I won't ever have a relapse...cause I almost did earlier today..but if I can get busy with the 2 while waiting on Wayne..that might keep me busy enough not to go day dreaming again.. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Anything I could hunt with an 06 or a 30-30 I could hunt with a 45-70. So my perfect trio would only have one center fire, the 45-70. The other two would be a 22lr and 20ga TDC.

They are an investment that will appreciate with time as any good investment does.  After all, a few years ago you could buy a Handi for $150.00.  Now a barrel will bring close to that.. ;D

Thats my story and I'm stickin' to it.

pl270 and mechanic, My new excuse is, it is for my daughter.... and it is working ok, or was, till there was mention of a 45/70 barrel. The wife thought that was a bit much for a 10 year old to shoot. The investment part, yea it has worked too, so any more good ideas would sure help. We can't mention 3 at one time around here....

Not when she has the check book... :D :D :D :D :D

Having 3 is plenty for me now..I can only hunt with 1 at a time anyway..and it's a lot cheaper to buy ammo or to load for 3 as opposed to 116  ;D

Nope...my collecting days are almost done I think and now I just want to have more fun shooting..than always looking for the right load on a couple dozen different rifles..

My Handi/H&R rifle battery (all factory) consists of .22RF, .22 Hornet, .223, .357, 30-30, .308, and 45-70.  Guess I got ya covered on the high end  ;D

The main reason I buy handy rifles is that they are relatively inexpensive and they shoot well.  I have more than these but if I were to cut down to only three I would stick with a 223, 308 and 45-70.  This way I can hunt anything that walks crawls or flies with a handy.  To those I have added a 357 Mag, 243, 45/410, and a 38-55.  I would like to add a 30-30 and a 22 hornet someday.

I kicked this around for a long time..(ask Quick :D )..so I didn't come to choose my Trio on a whim. There are so many different combinations of rifles/shotguns/rim fires available to use with the Handi it is unreal. Picking any 3 to cover all the bases for a rifleman depends a-lot on what and where a person hunts/shoots..

On the heavy caliber end..I had a choice to make between having a 26" 444 and a 45-70..oh sure I could have gone with most other calibers but in doing so I would have to give up one of my 26" barrels to do that. I love both calibers, and feel each in a 26" tube could do anything I called on them to do,but I know realistically a 22" barreled one would do the same. This is why I opted to get a factory 22" barrel by trading my 280 barrel. The extra 200fps isn't going to do me any better than the standard velocity and since I would have other rifles filling in for the longer distance,I thought I could do more with a smaller caliber. Any brush hunting or hog hunting I get the opportunity to do will either be at long range 300 + yards,or spitting distance. Since I will be using a different rifle for my long range (30-06) I will have mine stoked with some 405 grain Cast Performance bullets at max velocity for the gun.No hog, even one the size of Hogzilla will worry me with that load.

Medium caliber end..I chose to have a 26" 30-06 done by Wayne York. Those that know the 30-06 know how versatile it really is with all bullet weights. I am opting to use it for my medium to long range work..anything from the occasional coyote up,but primarily for my longer ranges I have for my deer hunting opportunities. I could have easily had a 30-40 Krag AI,but even with it's max loadings in a 22" barrel it won't out perform what the o6' will do in the 26" barrel. SAMMI rated loads will give between 100-200 fps more with a good 26" barrel & load, but I have intentions of getting the best combination of velocity and accuracy and since it is under loaded for the rifles max pressure..well..my velocity is going to be much higher.

My smaller caliber isn't really a smaller caliber..it is still going to use a 308 bullet but at much more sedate speeds. The venerable 30-30 Handi is what I cut my teeth on with in these rifles. Accuracy can be outstanding, and ease of getting factory and home brew loads is exceptional. For a varmint rifle it does lack yardage, but can be used if properly loaded and shot, for a long range rifle...well..it isn't but yardages can be stretched further with proper loading and with the right components. Many an animal has fallen to it since it first came about..but..since I don't have to worry about using lever gun ammo in a single shot...you guys know where this is headed..

These 3 rifles are a perfect trio to me..I can and will use cast bullets with all 3..I can and will make up some very inexpensive plinking loads with all 3 but I will also have the optimum load for each. Having just 2 of the same calibers means I can use the same bullets for 2,which simplifies things somewhat as well. I can even go rabbit/squirrel hunting with a very mild cast bullet load for the 30-30..I know..I did it for a few summers growing up when it was all I had to use..and since rabbits/squirrels are the smallest critter that will be in my sites..this can work really well..It may not seem practical since a rim fire or shotgun could work better..but from past experiance this suits me perfectly...Oh..in case some
want to read what others say on the matter..check this out...http://www.leverguns.com/articles/paco/3030varmint.htm  I know when the time comes for bigger game..what better cartridges to have at my disposal than my other 2 choices..

Sure some may go faster..and some may seem more exotic.. but these 3 when used to their fullest capabilities offer more bang for the buck than anything else going right now. They lack in certain ways for specific duties, but the more than make up for it in everything else they bring to the table. Not to mention they are some if not the most consistantly accurate cartridges offered in these neat little rifles..

Like I said..these are my perfect trio..and this is has been my why..Now..go find yours   ;)

I really like your line of reasoning Mac.  It really makes the whole thing simple.  Life really should be simple.  Congratulations on finding your perfect trio.

Now you bess get them three fixed before locking them up together.  Handis been known to multiply!

Good luck!

Thanks Jerry..

Yup...life should get simpler as we get older...Ain't always the case..but I am sure trying to make it that way. I'm sure the temptation will always be there specially if and when I find a jewel hiding somewhere..but..you know the prospect of that happening in todays market is a-lot different than just a few years ago. These little guys are growing in popularity, every day,and with the parent company reducing what is made and with them not wanting to expand the lines..it's going to get very difficult to find any of the special calibers and when you do they will be commanding premium prices..Heck just watching the various WTB/WTS forums is should be evidence enough of this sad fact.

Nope...My trio is a good one..one that I can live with if all others are never found or acquired..Sure I will always want more of them..but I don't have any need to..so if perchance I stumble across a nice 7x57 or even rarer caliber for a song..it will most likely get sold for better optics or stocks I want to have for my Trio..They don't have to worry about any siblings joining them in their home..but do have to have it kept clean for possible visitors from time to time.. ;D ;)

My perfect trio  45 70, 45 70 and 45 120, got the first 2, working on the last.   Ohio allows hunting small game with a centerfire rifle; they may want to change that law after this squirrel season. ;D

You might try making up some 'gallery loads' per the old days using round balls. At squirrel distance they would do the job.

Just kidding on the squirrels with the 45 caliber, but it would be an interesting chat with the local game warden when I walked out of the state forest with a 45 70 during small game season.

My trio is 7mm-08, 30-30, and 22 Hornet. I think I am good for anything but grizzlies and if I want the wife to know that I will tell her!! ::) ::)

I do think these three will do everything I need in South Alabama (and most of North America), but that doesn't mean I don't want more!

I know some say that you need more gun, but if I ever have to shoot a moose I don't think he will care if he was shot with a 300 mag or a 22 Hornet. He will be just as dead if I do my part.

Live simple. Hunt Hard. Love Life.

I thank God everyday for my loving wife and all the fond memories of hunting with my Papa from a child until now.

Please take time to take a kid hunting, it will be a life long memory and blessing for both of you!

Very nice choice..but as far as the moose hunting aspect..they can soak up a lot of hits from smaller guns and still go a long way from what I've been told..I think I would have to go with your 7-08 if moose hunting over the hornet..That's just me though.. ;) ;D

Just kidding on the squirrels with the 45 caliber, but it would be an interesting chat with the local game warden when I walked out of the state forest with a 45 70 during small game season.

I can just here how that conversation would go..after checking your license and game count..

Game Warden; What kind of gun you using there son ?

Hunter; Why it's my trusty H&R Handi rifle sir..

Game Warden; What caliber is that H&R son?

Hunter; Why it is a 45-70 officer..

Game Warden; Well..I am going to have to write you a citation son..

Hunter; But...But...why officer..? I thought it was perfectly legal to hunt with it..

Game Warden; Actually it is son..however you didn't  have a logging permit to cut down trees to get those squirrels...
