My trio is 7mm-08, 30-30, and 22 Hornet. I think I am good for anything but grizzlies and if I want the wife to know that I will tell her!! ::) ::)

I do think these three will do everything I need in South Alabama (and most of North America), but that doesn't mean I don't want more!

I know some say that you need more gun, but if I ever have to shoot a moose I don't think he will care if he was shot with a 300 mag or a 22 Hornet. He will be just as dead if I do my part.

Daman

Very nice choice..but as far as the moose hunting aspect..they can soak up a lot of hits from smaller guns and still go a long way from what I've been told..I think I would have to go with your 7-08 if moose hunting over the hornet..That's just me though.. ;) ;D

Mac

Just making a point MAC. I definitely would go with the 7-08 and probably hard cast bullets. Actually I would probably just forget the trio thing and go grab one of my 30-06's!!!!

Just kidding on the squirrels with the 45 caliber, but it would be an interesting chat with the local game warden when I walked out of the state forest with a 45 70 during small game season.

I can just here how that conversation would go..after checking your license and game count..

Game Warden; What kind of gun you using there son ?

Hunter; Why it's my trusty H&R Handi rifle sir..

Game Warden; What caliber is that H&R son?

Hunter; Why it is a 45-70 officer..

Game Warden; Well..I am going to have to write you a citation son..

Hunter; But...But...why officer..? I thought it was perfectly legal to hunt with it..

Game Warden; Actually it is son..however you didn't  have a logging permit to cut down trees to get those squirrels...

Mac

Now that is funny I don't care who you are.

Oh yea...gotta love those 30-06's...I know I do..Of course that 7-08 ain't no slouch neither...cause it is a fine cartridge too..I've owned a couple of them in the past..even had one of the first Remington's 788 chambered for the round  when they came out with it years ago..

Don't make a permit good enough to keep you out of jail on that one!

Three centerfires,,,,,,
Okay,
.308 winchester, I know it's a one shot stop on elk with a 170 grain flat point and will shoot better than I can see at
300 yds with a 110 grain speer hollow point

20 guage smooth bore  Birds and small game with shot and up to deer with slugs

.357 mag 18" barrel  Cat sneeze loads in .38 specia,l  close range deer stoppers with .357 mag full loads

All three calibers are fairly common and experience has taught me all three work, each has limitations, taken together these three cover the most possibilities I can think of

Had a good day for a change..weather was crappy..but I gota few goodies for my trio today..trying to get everything set up for each..I grabbed a nice little 4-16x50 Pentax scope from Lik2hunt off the optics for sale forum..to start..Thanks John..It will ride on my 30-06 Wayne is cutting for me..1 less thing to have to worry about..It should work ok..I haven't had a Pentax in a long long time..
Figured I was on a roll..so I headed to Grafs this morning..I wanted to pick up some supplies for my trio since I had already talked it over with the little lady and got her blessing on it ;D  I wanted enough of an assortment to last for a while..and with supplies being a flakey and prices going thru the roof of late..thanks to Obama..well..I was hoping not to spend too much.. :-\
I picked up 500 Federal 210M primers..and had to snatch them quick because they were being grabbed by a couple other guys ..they weren't real happy..but I was :D..
Got some Sierra 125grain 30 cal bullets..some Hornady 30 cal 155 grain A-Max's...some Speer UDC 300 grainers for the 45-70..This should hold me for a while since I have some more coming in soon from a good friend on a trade.. Thanks Nomosendaro ;) and I already snagged a box of the tipped 130grain triple shocks from my local gun dealer..he owed me a box of 30-06 ammo anyway..and I figured 50 was better than 20.. :D and I can use them in the 30-30 Handi I got from Quick..also got some Bergers 168 grain VLD hunting bullets and some168 grain CT Ballistic Silver tips
Let's see..added a pound of H4198 and Benchmark..should work for both the 30-30 and the 45-70
Since I needed some dies..I figured why not and got  new set of RCBS 30-30 dies and shell holder for them...They didn't have Hornady's or Lee's..so retail on them...ouch..
Well..since I got the dies..a bag of Winchester 30-30 brass and a bag of Remington regular brass for the 30-06 and 45-70..Had to have a Lee case trimmer for both the 30-30 & 45-70..new powder funnel..Doesn't seem like a whole lot for $245..but I feel a-lot better now that I have a small stash of components again..
Dinny dropped by..he went out shopping too and dropped by on his way home from Cabela's..He brought back some of my bruiser reloads I sold him earlier this year..Thanks Dinny..
Still got a few odd&ends to pick up..a Lyman "M" die and some Lee factory crimp dies for them too.. and some shell holders for my Lee Auto prime.. and that should just about do it ..My Plano reloaders box is certainly getting heavier now..but still manageable..

Going to a reloading store is like going to a grocery store when your hungry...everything looks good and you want a little of everything.. :D :D ;D I don't think I did too bad..Thank God I am only loading for 3.. ;)

Guys,

Guess I'm way off the others.  My preference is for bolt rifles and do not hunt varmits so my perfect trio would be:

  •   270 winchester scoped for long range
  •   9,3x62 Mauser also scoped fixed 4X or lower
  •   458 Winchester peep sights

Anyone else even close???

Nice,  but I'd go for the ballistically equivalent 9,3x74R because it's rimmed (and a very elegant looking cartridge).

The .45-120 fills in for the 458 (rimmed, and lower pressure), and I'd go one up with a .499 Hubel Express (.450 Nitro Express #2 expanded to .500).

1. 9,3x74R
2. .45-120
3. .499 Hubel Express

Well, if I used every one of the multiple "big" game rifles I have every hunting season for as many years to come, I would likely just make it before I got too decrepid to drag my sorry carcass up the mountain side (let alone drag a deer or something equally large back down!).  I am sure I had a good reason everytime I bought a new handi, or a new lever gun, or started on a new project caliber based on an old bolt action receiver...I just can't always remember what it was.  I have had tons of fun along the way though.

Thanks..

Dinny gave most them back to me ...he did keep 3 of them just to try... along with some of my 2450fps 300 grain Nosler Partition loads..; Him and skiforce tried them today out of Dinny's BC..I don't think they will be shooting for a while.. ;) They are the 405 gr. Cast Performance WLNGC and they clocked right at 2200-2250 fps out of my CVA Optima Elite..so they probably were screaming out of the BC barrel around 2400-2500 fps.. :o

They are my T-Rex loads..and they will blow thru most anything..You can ask him or skiforce how they shot after they get some feeling back in their shoulders :D :D :D :D :D

Should be fun..I agree..This time around with this 22" 45-70..my loads are going to be much more sedate..If I get a scope for it..I might go back up to these levels..but..in all reality I don't really need to.This is going to be my hundred yard gun..for rifle hunting..and my 30-30 is going to be used for up to 200-250 yards max...My 30-06 is going to be my bean field rifle and set up for that duty..

The Speer UCHP 300 grainer isn't as stout as the Partitions..so I won't be driving them quite as fast for a normal hunting load..I will see how they do at my normal velocities but will back it off after that..I figure I'll load for 1900-2000 fps and see how accurate they are at that speed..If hogs are in the area..I will have some bruiser loads ready..ya never know when Hogzilla will be there..but..hopefully I can get a few of the smaller ones lined up right for a single shot..

An excellent condition 24" 223 and Bushy scope will soon be finding it's way here. I just bought krod47nw's set up off the classifieds.. My lovely wife asked me tonight after dinner what rifles I had for my youngest to shot this summer..and I really hadn't thought about it till she said something. The 30-30 would be a good choice..but I would have to get another one pretty quick I am afraid.. While this one will be officially mine..it really will be his to shoot..and when he is ready to move up to a larger caliber..He will have my 30-30 to go to.Once this happens that one will either stay as it is..or get shipped out west to become something else..The choices I will have on that one is pretty awesome..from standard calibers to wildcats...So...I can officially say it's my perfect Quartet..and no..I won't be reloading for it..I don't see the need actually with all of the good ammo available for it..

Yea Yea...I know...many of you said so...There...I said it for you..
