Concealed Carry Bill Passes Senate and is Sent on to the Governor

Madison - 11.11.03

Today, at about 1:30 pm, the state senate passed the amended concealed carry bill, SB214, on a voice vote. (A voice vote means that there was no real objection to passing, and there is no record as to how individual senators voted). It is now on its way to Governor Doyle's office. He will have seven days from the time it reaches his desk to veto the bill. And he is certain to veto it.

We must keep calling and writing our representatives and senators to make sure that we have the votes to override Doyle's veto. In the last senate vote we had two more votes than necessary to override. In the assembly we were two votes short of the number required, but the two Republican representives who voted against it--Representatives Olsen and Townsend--have indicated that they will consider voting to override.

This is going to be very tight. We must hold on to at least four of the six senate Democrat votes that we got, and we must make sure that we get Representatives Olsen and Townsend to vote to override, as well as keep the votes of the seven assembly Democrats who voted for the bill.

Again, call your representatives and senators, and urge everyone you know to call as well. If you don't know who your legislators are, go to www.legis.state.wi.us/waml to find out. Your friends without internet access can call 1-800-362-9472 between 9am and 5am to be transferred to their legislators' offices.

This will all be over in the next week to week and a half. It is imperative that we win, or we will not have another chance until at least 2007.

Let's keep the pressure on!
