What Holographic sight do you use??
« on: March 09, 2010, 01:09:21 PM »
I would like to help my aging eyes by putting a holographic red dot sight on my mdl 83 .454.  What has worked for you, and has held up to the .454's recoil?  Thanks for your input...........Gary

Gary, I don't have one yet but I'm saving for a JPoint.  I called the factory and they advised they have had no problems, recoil wise, with the 500 S&W - not sure if the snap of a lightweight 454 would cause problems.  Here's the site:

Gary

I have a Burris FastFire ll holographic sight mounted via the rear sight dovetail on a .45acp and it works fine with about 800 or so rounds thru it.  I also have one mounted on an AR-15 with several thousand rounds fired, also without problem.  The sight seems durable, and it is small in size, a big plus on a handgun.  I don't have a pic of the .45, but here is one of the sight mounted on the scope ring of my AR

Gary,

I have a Jpoint that was on my 4.75" 83 in 454.  Probably put several hundred full house loads and many more than that 250/1100fps plinking loads.  No issues with the Jpoint failing.  The other hard kicker that this Jpoint has been on is my 458 Socom AR15.  No problems there either.

FA makes a mount that replaces the rear iron sight, and they even have a leather holster cut out for it.  Pretty easy to modify a nylon holster, or perhaps a leather one if you do not have too much cash in the holster.

The dot sure is easy to use, and the only reason I do not have it on full time is that I wear the gun up at the ranch all the time, and between rain, snow, wood chips (cutting trees), and general knocking about, on the hip, the sight is likley to collect debris.  And as the dot is projected onto the glass (plastic), it wouldn't take too much debris to block the sight. It does have a cover, but too much knocking about, jeep seats, door jambs etc. I am always stressing over the cover getting knocked off.   Two big thumbs up for the sight as a sight, but I would say you have to temper based on how you will use and carry the gun.

I have a Trijicon Red Dot on my 83 454.  Has held up fine so far.

Thanks for your replys, everyone.  You have certainly helped me in my research, and I think I have one picked out now in my research, and you guys are right on.  Both the Jpoint and Trijicon are very highly rated.

Thanks again, Gary.

FWIW JPoint cover has provision to tether to the holster so when drawn, it stays and won't lose it. W/mine, I got the sight protector JP makes that has 'ears' to protect it from ruff handling and also has a small hole in each ear that one can tether the cover to rather than the holster, if that's your wishes w/o worrying about losing it. The FastFire sight protector and cover doesn't have that option but suppose one could modify it.

On my other revolvers, I use the ultra dot tube (closed to the elements) w/lifetime warranty as the open reflex types discussed can be put out of commission just when one needs it most. One of the distributors for Ultra Dot that is the U.S warranty station refuse to sell their open style similar to FastFire and JPoint having an exposed screen also. Having pointed that out to me, I use the tube type in the wet inclimates.

Too bad to hear those comments from the Ultradot distributor regarding the Pan A-V. Together with the Ultradot reputation, lifetime warranty etc. I was thinking about one. Almost everyone I know with a Bushy holosight or other reflex type has experienced a failure and is out of warranty.

Our discussion was w/regards to their Ultra Dot L/T. At that time, I wasn't aware of the Pan A-V and that distributor didn't stock it either.  Since that time, someone did suggest giving the Pan AV a try but its screen is exposed to the elements also. Anyway, I went w/their enclosed, tube type sight which is also more affordable. Over the yrs, I've managed to pick up 3 more of their various models w/o experiencing any issues so far.

Since my last post I purchased a holographic sight but went with the Leupold Delta Point.  $400 & a lifetime warranty.  I should have paid $450 and got all the mounts, as you can’t purchase the different mounts separately.  The Delta is 7.5 MOA but doesn’t appear to be large in the heads-up display.  Takes practice to be able to bring the revolver up and have the delta in the display but I’m getting faster with it.  Once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty fast getting on target.  I use the tip of the delta as the aiming point and I think it’s about like having a 1 MOA dot – off the bench it shoots like a scope.  So far it has held up to the recoil from the 500S&W and 454.

Was wondering, is the delta is always clear and sharp or do different shooting conditions cause it to fade or get fuzzy?

Thanks,

Paul

I've only had mine a couple weeks and so far its been very sharp & crisp.  I'm near sighted and at arms length the delta is fuzzy but when I put on my glasses, its extremely sharp.  I'll be taking it out again next week but so far, I've used it in the shade and with the sun to my back and its very sharp.  Haven't shot into the sun with it yet but I doubt that will make any difference.

Paul, I was out today and the sky was overcast & rained off & on – I occasionally had a slight blurring or half a ghost image and would have to move the delta around the heads-up display to sharpen it up.  Didn’t happen much and it wouldn’t be a problem shooting at game animals – more of a nuisance shooting from the bench.

Thanks for the update.

Was the flare you experienced due to the lens getting wet or just the optics reacting to the changing light conditions?

I have a JPoint and a Burris Fast Fire (both w/4 MOA dot).  Both will produce dot flare, halo, fuzzy dot (however you want to describe it) in differing light conditions, or with different eye glasses.

The flare is annoying and I was hoping the "Delta" might not be so afflicted.  Also, really liked the idea of the fine aiming point at the top of the delta.

Interesting. Had an EO Tech that was grainy and told even beforehand it was normal as it had something to do w/an individuals eye. If one has slight astigmatism, distortions may not be noticeable w/irons but a lighted dot it  will be. Corrective lens will clear it up but my eyes aren't always consistent day to day or month to month. In fact, the dot changes if my eyes are dryer than normal (sandman). It appears star shaped. Having it call red dot, I unconsciously expect it to be red and a round dot. There's no law that says it must be just an expectation and something different is then perceived to be lesser/sub std. W/that in mind I too have been wondering about the leupold delta and not getting hung up on having a round dot.

The lens never got wet.  I’m just a novice with this magic sight, so I’m still learning but I think ODOH might be on to something.  My son-in-law was shooting with me and he experienced what he called a fuzzy delta a couple of times and thinks it was just his eyes, as he looked away from the sight and when coming back to the sight, the delta was sharp again.  He’s got 20/20 vision.  I just made a couple circles with the delta within the display and it sharpen back up and I was wearing my glasses.  We only started noticing it after about 3 or 4 hours on the range (we spent 6 hours out there and the only down time was mounting/dismounting the sight on a couple of 50’s).

I have an Eotech 512 that I use on my Bushmaster M4.  They're great for certain applications, but I'm not sure I'd want to use one on a hard-recoiling handgun.  I did have it on a Browning buckmark .22 auto and it actually shot really well.   I guess it would work alright, I don't know though, a good quality 2x optical scope is hard to beat on a hunting handgun.

I've also got an Eotech 552A65 and an Eotech rep advised me their products were good to go with any 454 or 50 caliber handgun.  If by chance anything went wrong just send it to them & they would replace it but the rep doubted there would be any problems from recoil.  Weight wise a heads-up display such as the DeltaPoint or JPoint is the way to go IMO on handguns.

Many of the earlier EO Tech models are like huge on a handgun. BUT most will offer 1MOA dots which can be nice

I bought the JPoint a couple of years ago. At the time my eyes were changing and I would get a lot of flare depending on the glasses I wore. It got so annoying that I went back to iron sights.

My eyes seem to have stabilized now, and I am wearing much higher quality continuous (bifocal) lenses with an anti glare coating. Maybe it is time to put the JPoint back on the FA83 and see how it does with it.

I'd like to hear how it works out for you ~ also, what I tho't would be a needed prescription change, turns out to be cataracts forming. So, they say in a couple more yrs, perhaps surgery.
