This has been discussed quite a few times. You might do a search on the subject and check out the old discussions.  The feeling I have is that it is too much and is really pushing the limit, but there are a lot of guys shooting it and doing just fine (for the most part). I guess the question is whether you are willing to risk your frame to try it out.

Didn't blow up my last carbine barrel and liked it enough to buy a pistol length barrel...Some folks says there are better calibers, I agree, I have 30-30 ai and 308 bellms, figure 309 JDJ would be too, but Krag is good and for long heavy cast bullets a real winner.  If It won't blow up a 110 year old Krag, probably won't blow up your contender, just-as always- use sane and safe loading methods.  I'm standing by for the barrage of...such and so custom barrel builder won't chamber it in a contender so it must be dangerous...same guy will chamber a 444 marlin though...go figure.

Gotta agree with previous post!!!  If you load to loads published for the old 1898 models you'll be fine. I own an 1896 and a 1898 carbine in a Krag and have a 14" Contender, SSK re-chamber w/SSK brake and TSOB that's a tack -driver! I've killed 3 deer using 150gr Hornady bullets with the Krag barrel and it dropped them DEAD in their tracks!! Factory Remington 180gr core-loc loads shoot extremely accurate out of my barrel!!
