Best Handi barrel for long range fun
« on: March 10, 2010, 09:57:42 AM »
OK - I am loaded for everything from ground squirrels to elephants as far as hunting goes.  So this question is just about plain old having fun on the "long range" lane at the range (say 200-400 yards).  Any recommendations for a Handi caliber that would offer fun at the range in this regard?  25-06?  280?  45-70 BC?  The more accurate, the more fun and less frustration.

I say yes yes and yes... you can even add the old HO HUM 30/06 to that and if I can get a 20/06 done I kind of think that would be fun.Kurt

Well...200-400 yards isn't a real long shot in my area..so for pure fun...hmmm..a nice bull barrel 243 comes to mind..With the right load for it..getting in the .2's isn't difficult..and it won't beat you up...For long range..Talk to Quick about a 260 AI...that would be another good one..but for me..When I get it back from Wayne..I'll say in advance my 26" 30-06 with some Berger 168 grain VLD's...or even the 168 grain Ballistic Silver Tips.. ;D This will let me stretch it out way past 600 yards..and that is fun to me.. ;)

pinpoint long range accuracy I always think of a larger diameter bullet, anything from 7mm (.284), and of course the wonderful all american .30's and upwards....<><....:)

In support of my flat shooter argument, compare every other cartridge mentioned, with drop from 200-400 yards. It already has recoil and accuracy well documented.

30-06, LOTs of proven bullets, jacketed and cast lead to choose from, as cheap and available components as you could hope for and it is hard to find a load combination that doesnt work.
I shoot cast lead in mine with complete satisfaction. Last summer 3 of us spent a day shooting buffalo sil. out to 250 yd. with a variety of .30 cals. with lead, mostly offhand, and had a lot of 'kills'.
Light loads to full house, it does it all without frustration = fun.

I notice only one handiholic recommends the 22-250.  Have folks had trouble with that particular caliber as far as accuracy goes - or have I just hit on the occassional disgruntled 22-250 shooter?

The best my 204 Handi would group at 100 yards was 1.5 MOA so at 400 yards that's a spread of 6 inches. So selecting a caliber and a round for that range has to take into account how big the target is that you are trying to hit.  For ground hogs my 204 was just not adequate. To me 400 yards means 'bolt gun' and if it is small game, like ground hogs you are shooting at, it is hard to beat the 22-250.

For what you've asked I would go with a 7-08 or .280, But a .45-70 BC has more fun factor to me. 8)

Yeah, sometimes that old 308 just doesn't get its due.  And in a handi, you should be able to load some pretty stiff loads (saami max is about 3K less than 270, right?).

400 isnt long range , any good grouping center fire rifle would work . i would also go with a bull barrel 243 no use beating yourself up just shooting that far and its still big enough to buck the wind a bit. but the 25-06 does come in a close 2nd

I have the reamer for my 20-06 sitting here, it may do really well with 40gr bullets out past 400 yards.  I haven't shot any targets yet, but it does shoot, and would really put some pep into that 204 Ruger.  Larry

I like my 22-250 very dead on. Just finely try some 40 gr out of her first reloads was 1 hole that you can cover with the size of the back of the brass. I thalt I was missing ;D Anyway I know the 300 win mag or was it 300 wdy mag can't remember Kick like hell but very dead on at long range.

I have to disagree with everyone. My vote is for the .45-70 BC. Hitting at long range is fun with high velocity rounds, but you haven't had fun until you launch a slug so big and slow that you can lower the rifle before the round hits!

I have hit small targets with a 30/06 past 400 yds and I have hit them with a 223 past 400 yds. With my equipment it is usually a secound shot with windage. A good investment might be a trajectory compensateing scope and a range finder. Might make hits more consistant. eddiegjr

I've got to agree with badnewsbob and OSOK.  For the most challenging fun, it's the .45-70 all the way.

We should see if Sourdough can get involved in this thread. IIRC he has spoken about wolves in Alaska at 600-700 yards with his 30-06 Handi. And remember that a 1/2 mile is 880 yards.
My money is on Sourdough being able to connect on a wolf at 880 yards with his 30-06 Handi and given a "sighter" or two....<><....:)

OK, No question about it.  Yes the 30-06, of all of NER/H&R offerings that is the best one.  While 400 yards is longer than what most people shoot, it is easily within the 30-06s capability with just an average shooter and a little work.  Usually in one week I can have an already trained 100 yard shooter shooting at that range and hitting a 4" clay target.

The major thing I am thinking is long range shooting is addictive.  Once you reach your goal of 300 yards you will move out to 400.  Then the bug will bite and you will move on out to 500, 600, and continue till you run out of ranges long enough to shoot at.  1,000 yard ranges are hard to find.  The 30-06 will shoot out to 1,000 yards if you do your part.  Therefore start with the best and not have to change anything later once you have worked up your loads.

One other train of though.  Once you can hit a 4" clay target every shot at 400 or 500 yards, you might decide to go after Antelope, Mule Deer, Sheep, or Elk.  Even sniping Coyotes at 400 yards can be lots of fun.

As for shooting Wolves at ranges greater than 500 yards, yes I can hit them, I've hit them out to 700 yards, but it is not an instant take down.  Velocity is down low enough that they usually run off and I have to track them down.  So I try and limit my shots to 500 yards

Well said. And FWIW, a lot of people are quite amazed at the silouette hits we make with 22LR at 200-300yd.

Interesting thread. Figured this was somehow relevant. Note that a 941 yard shot on a man by a pro sniper with a $$$$ sniper rifle and all the trappings, is considered notable. The funny thing about Rob Furlong's record shot, which is rarely mentioned, is that he killed the guy NEXT TO the guy that he was aiming at. .50's are not considered to be that accurate. Snipers leans towards the .300 Win Mag for accuracy. And they swap barrels fairly quickly (<1k rounds) due to loss of accuracy. Not too many long range shots by me. One 1000 yard range at a club consider very tough to join. Friend killed a woodchuck <500 yards last year. 22-250. First shot was a complete miss. Second shot nailed it. He has killed a lot of deer (bigger target) on farms using depredation permits with the same gun <300 yards.

The longest range recorded for a sniper kill currently stands at 2,430 meters (2,657 yd, or 1.51 miles), accomplished by Master Corporal Rob Furlong, a sniper from Newfoundland, Canada, in March 2002 during the war in Afghanistan. Furlong made this record-breaking kill while he was participating in Operation Anaconda. He was a member of the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). To make the kill, he used a .50 caliber BMG (12.7 mm) McMillan TAC-50 bolt-action rifle.[18] Utilizing a ballistic calculator, it is possible to reproduce the trajectory and time-in-flight of such a ranged shot. With a nominal muzzle velocity of 823 metres (2,700 ft) per second for the Hornady 750 gr A-MAX projectile, and an estimated ballistic coefficient of 1.05,[19] such a shot fired at the estimated altitude of 9,000 feet (2,700 m) for the Shah-i-Kot Valley would have taken 3.92 seconds to reach the target, and drop 155.8 feet (47.5 m) during flight. Also note at such a long range, even a light breeze of 20 kilometres (12 mi) per hour would have blown the bullet off target by 20.8 feet (6.3 m).

The previous record was held by U.S. Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock in February 1967 during the Vietnam War, at a distance of more than 2,347 yards (2,146 m) using a scope-mounted Browning M2 .50 machine gun.[20][21][22] By contrast, much of the U.S./Coalition urban sniping in support of operations in Iraq is at much shorter ranges, although in one notable incident on April 3, 2003, Corporals Matt and Sam Hughes, a two-man sniper team of the Royal Marines, armed with L96 sniper rifles each killed targets at a range of about 860 metres (941 yd) with shots that, due to strong wind, had to be “fire[d] exactly 17 meters (56 ft) to the left of the target for the bullet to bend in the wind.”[23]

During Operation Enduring Freedom, Spanish Navy Marine snipers shot cables hanging from the mast to the bridge of the North Korean freighter So San, smuggling Scud missiles through the waters of Socotra Island. These cables were preventing it from being boarded by fast rope for an arms inspection. The shots were made at a range of 400 yards (370 m), with rough sea, from the deck of SPS Navarra (F85), and the Marines were armed with Barrett M95 rifles.[citation needed]

During Operation Harekate Yolo in Afghanistan, one Norwegian sniper of the 2nd Battalion, aiming from a trench, hit a Taliban insurgent from a distance of 1,380 meters, using 12.7 mm multi-purpose ammunition.[24]
