I used to teach wood shop / cabinet making in another life , a life time ago .
We bought most all our hardwoods from Martinez's up in Stockton, Ca.
Never seen any thing that beautiful grained ever come through the shop.
We used quite a bit of Mahogany as it was the "cheap" hardwood .
Gum wood when finished properly would resemble Walnut @ half the cost.
Gum wood was refered to as the poor mans Walnut in those days.
We saved all the hard knots from the run of the mill walnut for a custom gun stock maker . He made beautiful pistol grip caps for rifle stocks from it .
