New used 2/3 Field Cannon coming home soon
« on: March 11, 2010, 05:39:26 AM »
Looks like I'm joining all of you. I just bought a Dixie 2/3 scale field cannon.
Just need to make a spot for it and pick it up.
Oh, and break it to my wife.
In it's current form it's in a garrison mount. Believe that's the correct term.
I really would like to have it end up in a field carriage.
Looks like I need a couple of books mentioned here.
Comes with a mold. No ramrod, sponge or any of those things.
How necessary is a worm?
Any advise is welcome.
Carl, North East Wisconsin

Well, Carl, congratulations! Looks like the bug has bitten you good! Your at the right place to get the info you need so hang in there, you will be getting quite a bit of information soon! Worms are pretty necessary if you are using foil packets to contain your black powder, 'cause bits of the foil can remain in the barrel after firing, containing particles of smoldering powder. Not good when you go to reload! You need the swabs, sponges, rams, to clean and prepare your barrel for further shots, so look in the stickys for "how to" and make your own, or look at other sponsors for implements. BoomLover

Congrats!! Welcome to the forum!! I can't say much about your sequence of doing things....seems the wife notification might have come second or third at least!! 8)

You need a full set of tool for a long barrel, including a SAFETY rammer.  Lots of knowledge here, soak it up, and know what you are doing before you burn powder.

Exactly !  :D "whats a guy to do ?" if it 'drops' in your lap ...it drops into your lap ,then what ? Get up you can't get up with some umongus cannon laying there in your lap . So you do the right thing and give it a good home  . WELL DONE sounds like you saved it ! ;D

Yes a worm IS nessesary IF you use foil prebagged charges . If you ladle it in ....maybe not .

BTW what model cannon is it ?

welcome

You always need to worm.  You never know what someone might shove down the barrel.  You can't watch it 24 hours a day.  I once watched bluebirds build a nest inside the bore of a 12 lb Napolean at a re-enactment. :P  Don't skimp on this one.

Zulu is really right on this , sooner or latter you'll want it and dont shoot foil carrtridges with out it ! Dom can fix you up real  fast and resonable .

The other piece of stuffage you'll need is a tompion so bluebirds dont make a nest in there . ;)

Its a plug for the bore as simple or fancy as you want . I posted on the one I made but it was awhile ago . You maybe able to find it ? I made mine from a wooden wheel from a hobby lobby and a drawer pull knob . I wanted to make one using no custom turning "Bored" was the tilte IIRC  , I'll look .

Ah now I see why you keep saying it's a field cannon! That's all the description Dixie give.  It appears to be a Hern 6 PDR Model 1841, http://www.hernironworks.com/cannons.html

Well things are progressing slow but sure.
My wife sure thinks I am nuts and who am I to argue, I;m not crazy.
Cannon safely resting in the back of my LandCruiser.
Stump remover, cotton rope and paint rollers purchased.
Need a place to put it, so a shed is in the planning stage.
Carriage plans are ordered But I can't find the Complete Cannoneer Book.
Any Leads? The links all seem to dead end.

The More complete Cannoneer might be hard to come by, it is out print.

We just have to keep encouraging Artilleryman to keep prodding Matt Switlik, for even a reprint of the current edition.

Thats a good thing as it should be able to shoot pool balls ! They are not nearly as heavy as iron or steel but coming out of a cannon barrel they would be impressive .
If you know of a pool bar they will have extras as they  get worn out or chipped , I get them for free but I recover mine as I shoot them from a mortar so I dont need that many .

Even on ebay you can find a set for 10-15 bucks used .

The 8 ball may not fit .
