Just what are you expecting to do with this "back up gun"? If you are planning to use it for actually hunting deer I'll say a Glock of any variety is a poor excuse for a hunting handgun.

Yeah it can be done and the 10mm is powerful enough but a semi like the Glock is best used for personal self defense against two legged predators than for hunting game. I'm sure some folks use them but I'm also sure most who try aren't real effective at taking game with them.

I have shot whitetail deer with both .357 and 10mm and performance is the same. Use what you are comfortable with and keep all shots with in your personal zone (pie plate size group).

You are lucky its the opposite here . The 357 is a better round to reload IMHO. I carried a Glock 10 while hunting then switched to a 357 .

In that case if you are pretty handy with a handgun get a .357 Magnum revolver. If you are a poor shot with a handgun get a semi so you can spray and pray one hits the intended target. I'd suggest a .40 S&W rather than the 10mm tho for that use. Cheaper ammo and less recoil so you'll most likely hit what you aim for more often.

When I was younger I would carry all kinds of guns around the farm with me.
Sometimes 2 handguns with me.  A 22 and a 44 anlong with a shotgun.  I was out to meat hunt.
Later I would carry a 44 or 357 with me along with the 308 rifle as a back up.
But backing up a rifle for hunting is like "Backing up a battleship with a PT boat - Col Cooper".
Having the hand gun did give me a sence of security if I had to answer the call of nature while hunting in the deep dark woods in Black bear country.  But if a bear smelled me he would most likly be headed the other way.
I can understand some of the guys that will carry a handgun along with the rifle in case they get the chance to use it from a stand.
But there is NO, repeat NO way you are going to quick draw a (insert critter).  Trust me I tried.  Long story but I was only carrying a handgun and was trying to push deer to one of my friends.  Out steped a medium buck a few yards away.  We looked at each other and I went for my gun.  By the time I had the gun out the deer was headed for Oriental, NC and ran right under my friends stand, who shot it.
Had i had a rifle with me or had the handgun out.  Bang- Burgers and steaks.
Now add the putting the 500 away and getting out the other (10mm, or 357, or what ever) and you will end up seeing more stuff run away then shooting.
Yes the 500's are not cheap.  but how many rounds could you buy with the same $ you are going to spend on the 2nd gun, leather, cleaning supplies, ammo to practice with as well as ammo to hunt with.  Shooting an extra 2 or three 500s sound really cheap to me.
Go spend the same $ on a reloader, dies and a bench and roll your own cheaper.

I think if you got a .357 you would never regret it. But I happen to like them, A lot.  ;D

The 10mm was come up with to approxemate  a .357 load in a auto loader and it comes pretty close, But if it was me buying, It would be a .45 acp in a auto loader. Or of course another .357.. 8)

I've owned numerous 357s and a glock 10mm model 20. Glock is light and easy to carry and packs a punch. 10mm can beat allot of 357 rounds but you have to reload or buy from double tap or buffalo bore... Ted Nug is famous for hunting with his glock. The 357, IMO, is much more versatile and accurate. I believe everyone should own a 686 or gp100. If there are any rental ranges in your area try out the Glock. Not the best feel in the world, chunky pistol. My vote goes for the wheel gun.

another thing not mentioned is the lack of the fully adjustable sight on the glock. Something to consider if you actually want to try and shoot an animal with it. I have a .45 vaquero and without adjustable sights it took me many hours of reloading and shooting different loads to find out what would hit to the sights. Ended up using a 300 gr xtp with a medium charge of h110 behind it.

I agree with MasterBlaster.  Adjustable sights are the way to go, especially for shooting at live targets.  Instead of the Vaquero, why not get a stainless Blackhawk?  One of my favorite handguns (and I have lots of them) is a 4 5/8 inch stainless Blackhawk that I put a Super Blackhawk hammer and gripframe on.

Sights ? he-- the sights on a Glock are way better than most can shoot with the trigger found on one . It might be great under stress but for fine shooting i find it not the best for me.

I would put the 10mm just ahead of full power 357 mag. My situation is reversed, I can get Bufalo Bore's exelent 10mm 180gr. Gold Dot load eny time I drive the 30 miles to the cabela's store in Buda. But the same store never has the winchester 180gr. partition load I shoot in my 686 357mag. So I just carry my glock all the time around the ranch. So far I have taken a 175 pound hog and an large bodied axis deer with the glock, one shot each. Not to mention fox, snakes, turtles, rabbits, coons, and skunks. When I got it, it shot high for me, so I ordered a set of trijicon night sights, with a shorter rear sight. Now I can hit what I aim at, the longest shot being 55 yards so far.

If you compare the two ballistically you will see that a 357 which can get a 200 gn swc moving to 1300'/sec is about a step ahead of the 10mm with the same weight bullet moving at about 1200'/sec, which is about whatcha can get from the straight 10mm case and that weight bullet.  If you drop the 10 to a 180 gn slug, which is about the best all-around weight for the 10 and bring the velocity to 1300'/sec, you still don't match up to the 357.

But, with all due respect to the 10, the Glick is not the only game in town.  If you really want to use the 10 for close in or finishing shots, go with a 1911; it has a much better ignition system (trigger) and more ergonomic parts availability (grip stuff) than the Glock.

Although the 357 might be a bit ahead of the 10 in terms of power and velocity it does not mean the 10 is going to fail on Whitetail, hawg or even Bear.  A solid 200 gn flat nosed slug, either one of Veral Smith's LBT designs or something more along the lines of a Keith design, moving out the barrel of a 10 at 1200'/sec., will simply do the job and if the bullet is hard enough not to deform badly you will get a complete pass through.

For personal defense the 10 will overpenetrate unless you drop the bullet weight to about 135 gns and then it is pretty explosive at near 1400'/sec, which is right along with the 357's 125 gn slug at near the same velocity. jmtcw.

i do most of my hunting with fixed sighted vaqueros and dont see a limitation to them. Once there regulated for the load your using there just as accurate and easy to shoot as an ajustable sighted gun. As to the glock 10mm. I dont care for glocks but i sure wouldnt feel undergunned carrying one for whitetail or even hogs loaded properly and with sights that hit poa at 25 yards. The 10mm is a good hunting round that leaves the 357 in the dust and gives the 41 mag a run if comparing it to 41 factory loads. Most glocks are reliable so thats a big plus in the hunting field there compact and fairly light.  I could think of alot worse choises alot of handgun hunter use. Like about any handgun in 357.

That larger .40 cal bullet must make up for somthing. I agree a 10mm 1911 would make a great hunting side arm. If I could, I'd have a kimber.
But for going in the thick stuff after something bleeding, you can't argue with 16 rounds of 180gr JHPs going 1350fps.

I'm picking up a glock 20sf from a friend of mine since he is replacing it with a gp100!  from what i have seen i prefer the 10mm, but he shoots a revolver better, so he's going back to that.  keep in mind when you look at the listed velocities of the two rounds, what barrel length they are listed for.  typically 10mm is out of a standard length glock tube, but i have seen 357 listed in 10"+ bbls.  for an "inexpensive" trail gun that can take a beating, the glock is hard to beat.  Add a kkm barrel and shoot hard cast.  Here is a quote frokm buffalo bore's page describing their 220gr 10mm load:

Item 21C (a 220gr. Hard Cast plain based LFN) is the absolute heaviest bullet that can be fired through 10mm pistols. With it’s flat nose it will penetrate staright and very deeply into muscle and bone. Straight line penetration into living tissue will exceed three feet.

That should work...

I think bullet shape has alot to do with the 357 mag working well . The sharp shoulder imparts a cookie cutter effect where a smooth sided bullet from an auto loader does not . It why the 357 sig hasn't reached cult status like the 357 mag. IMHO .

SHOOTALL, by the time the L frames really hit the market the semi-auto was pretty much taking over law enforcement. I had two L frames in 686 that had the firing pins mounted on the hammer nose, which I liked far better than the ones with the frame mounted firing pins. I have a 686 now that has the frame mounted firing pin, and wish I had a Model 19, or Model66, but the 686 is indeed a workhorse. That's why I carry my Model 60 in 357 mag. It ain't the work horse, but I ain't doin that much plowin these days. Mostly fertilizin. ;) :D

hmmmm I'm thinking you can shoot a whole lot of S&W 500s for the cost of a 10mm, or .357 magnum. I think a Glock for coyote is worse than a Glock for deer.

A 6" S&W 686 is a nice revolver for close in hunting. A 7-1/2" S&W 629 Light Hunter is better for a little longer range.

If you want a 10mm, look at the EAA Witness there not expensive and can handle. Dan Wesson
Razorback in 10mm is a good choice but a bit pricy.
the heavy loads. IIRC Glocks rifling is polygonal so dont use cast bullets in them.

I think you will find plenty of us that shoot cast bullets from Glocks.
I did replace the factory barrel after several years but only to get rid of the case bulge
