Storing in a gun case, rust?

I'm very lucky, my gun safe is getting full and cramped. I was going to store my contender and spare barrel in a soft case inside the safe. There is a warning about storing firearms in cases due to trapping in moisture. Anyone have any thoughts on storing in gun cases. I'd appreciate the feedback.

I found this on the web -
I've put a few rifles up in the past, what I do is buy a can of cosmoline, clean the heck out of everything, and then just basically pack it in the grease.. I had an idea a few years ago that has worked out great, my wife has one of those vacuum sealer machines for food, the bags come in one long roll.. After I put the cosmoline on I just seal the gun up nice and tight with the vacuum machine. After that you could just about store it at the bottom of a pond....

I thought this was quite a unique approach.
Reminds me next time Wife goes to Wall-Mart need to ask her to pick up some of them vac sealer bags.  :D

I have seen those warnings but have stored guns in cases for extended periods of time (a few years) and never had a problem.  The only time I have opened a gun case and seen moisture was when it was subjected to temperature change.  My longterm storage was in the house.  If I shot them I left them out of the case to get to room temp. and then put back in case for storage.

One time I did have some slug barrels stored on a metal hook covered with fabric.  When I got them out one time there was rust on the barrel where it was laying on the fabric.  They now stand in the corner of my safe but have never had a problem where they contact the carpet.

I saw those warnings, put two hand-guns in cases and closed them, it was only surface rust, but a lot of it.
I now have some rags/cases that are permanently oil soaked that I store those guns in.

I have 20 guns stored in a 8-10 gun safe. all are in soft gun cases and so far never any rust. I have been doing this for over 25 years. they are packed pretty close together . they are in a dry cool area of my basement and I keep a 60-75 watt light bulb on at all times, I also have a humidity gauge in there so I can see if any moisture is possible. gauge shows 25-30%. they are also cleaned and oiled before I put them away every time I use them. I don't know how correct this is but it works for me.  :)

It seems to me that a lot of the rust problems may be caused by humidity in the storage area.
I live in a place that has extreme humidity at times but we are airconditioned these days and since that started, rust has not been the problem it used to be, with the exception of the gruby lil fingerprint I find on occasion. A man can have "tools" and he can have grandsons, but he cannot have tools and grandsons. Does that make any sense?

I've seen many guns ruined by being stored in soft cases.  I wouldn't do it.

My safe is in the basement. Not the best place in the house but it stays cool in the summer. You've all given me allot to consider. Thanks for the replys.

I have stored guns in soft cases, hard cases, and a safe.  The general rule is to keep these things in an area that is cool and dry, and oil them once a year or so.  My hard cases have gotten oil saturated over time and this leaves additional oil on the surface of the gun. 

One area that I watch out for is back in the day I had so many military bolt action rifles that I stored them behind my bed on the carpeted floor in soft cases piled on each other.  They seemed to go dry faster than the guns in the safe, in other words, oil would seem to disappear from the surfaces of the barrel, action, etc.  I think there was some air movement in this location, but I would simply reapply oil every 6-9 months to protect them.

Use a gun oil with good corrosion protection and you won't have to worry about it.  ;)
