My Latest C&R Acquisition
« on: March 14, 2010, 04:12:40 AM »
Just got my second Lee Enfield. It's a No. 5 Jungle Carbine. Is there any way to tell when and where it was made from the serial number?

It is V 4XX.

Hi, From the prefix "V" it is British made, ROF-Fazakerley rifle made in 1946.

Nice find.  These are kind of rare and the prices have been going up on these too.

Shot one once and enjoyed it. Never able to "pull the trigger" on buying one.
Great find and have fun!

Gosh, I remember looking at these as a young teen in the mid-60's.  Racks full in VG to EX condition - take your pick $25.  And, they were the most expensive of the Enfields.  Other models were under $20.

Could also buy 4 for $99 mail order.  A .22 trainer, No.1, No.4, and No.5!

Nice rifle.  As a boy I always gazed at them, but the old italian and jap rifles were $6.00 which made the Enfield kinda pricey.

Let us know how the old girl shoots!

I've always wanted a No.4 Enfield.  I have just never found one in good enough shape to warrant the prices I've seen.  I have always been scared of ordering an Enfield from the major importers, there is just too much junk out there in Enfields.  Most were used hard and put up wet. It looks like you did well.

Got my No.4 Mk.1 a long time ago for 170 bucks. But that was long before you know who got elected and drove all gun prices up.

Got my No. 4 Mk2 a long time ago, as well. Paid $80.00 for it. That was during the Nixon administration. I saw a similar rifle at a recent gun show, but the asking price was $349.00. Things sure do change.

Just remember that back in the 60's $20 to $25 was a lot of money. Take into account inflation and it would come out close to the prices you see today. In 1970 at the age of 13 I worked like a dog all summer mowing yards, helping build barbed wire fence putting up hay and other jobs to make $40.00 to pay for my first highpower rifle. A new un-issued Remington 1903A3 Springfield.

I hear that!  In the mid-60's, I cut grass, shoveled snow, and caddied at a 2-bit country club.  Generally got paid about $3 per!  Took a lot to save up for my first gun.  A used Mossberg bolt action 16ga (nobody wanted 16ga at the time) for $22.  Rem 'Hi-brass' shells were almost $3/box, even then.  I used to buy 'Canuck' paper shells - a lot cheaper.

My first centerfire was a like-new 7x57mm M1895 Chilean Mauser (made in Germany).  My high school buddies bought it for me as a going-away present.  $25 + $3/100 for surplus ammo.

The Jungle carbine was avilavble about 5 years ago from Century import. They went for under $300. If you want tio find out about yours just use Google.com and put in Enfield...tons of stuff on the internet on it. You know my dad got a M1 carbine for $16.00 in the 1960's and even a Remington 1911 for 17.00 thru as NRA as an instructor.
Coffee was a nickle back then too.

Then I feel pretty good at the $240 I just paid for mine.
