I have been considering on purchasing a barrel for my Encore frame either in a 308 or 30/06 in 15".  I have considered TC custom shop or talking to Virgin Valley.  If anyone could give some advice on caliber and barrel maker would be appericated.

Is there a reason for not using the factory barrel? I have not had any better results from custom barrels that with factory barrels.

Like Questor said, don't discount the regular ol' factory barrels.  I've got a stainless 15" .308 that will shoot inch groups (a little better every once in a while when I mess up :-D ) with 150 grain SSTs or BTs.  For the price of a used factory barrel, I'd say give one a try before you go custom.  You might like it!

I shoot an Encore 15" 308 Win Barrel that is factory and get under 3/4" groups at 100 yards and around 2" groups at 200 yards. I have to agree I don't know what the advantage would be with a custom barrel. Just my two cents worth. :D

Between the two calibers you listed I would stick with the 308Win.  You will use less powder and get the same performance in a 15" tube.

When it comes to custom VS stock.  My experience with stock barrels has been pretty poor.  The only stock barrel I have been satisfied with was a 209X50 muzzleloader barrel.  My personal preference would be a custom barrel.

Hello there:

You can't go wrong with the 308. Plenty of power, it kicks a lil bit harder than the 30-06, and don't ask me why. My cousin has a 30-06 which I traded him unfired, and it does not kick as hard as my 308. Even J.D. Jones said the same thing that he had noticed.

As for accuracy, the 308 is extremly accurate. I have many custom barrels, and also many T/C barrels, both from T/C and Fox Ridge, their custom shop. I've never had a factory barrel I could "outshoot." Every barrel I have is plenty capable of more accuracy than I am able to give it, and I consider myself a very good shot. I have chronograph notes, and saved targets to show for it.

The factory T/C barrels in my opinion will shoot as accurate as the high dollar custom ones. The reason I have custom ones, is because I love wildcats, and often T/C does not have them, nor does Fox Ridge have what I want. I have custom barrels from J.D. Jones, VV Custom Guns, and Bullberry.

So, you will be safe knowing you have a precision shooter with just the regular factory run, or maybe I've just been extemely lucky in my years of using the T/C arms.

Just got my 300/223 back today from Virgin Valley and have been playing with it.

Hope this may help, it's just my 2 cents worth.
