Encore goes bang without pulling the trigger
« on: March 14, 2010, 12:09:23 PM »
I went to the range to try out my new MGM barrel. Shoot 3 or 4 shots and then go to shoot next one. Cock gun and start to get on target and gun goes bang. Finger off the trigger. Try it a few more times and same thing. It would stay cocked for a few seconds and then bang.
I have installed a 3 lb trigger spring and the heavy hammer spring. Did this about 18 months ago and never have had a problem until today. Anyone know what is going on.  I havent pulled it apart yet but from what I see it looks OK. Weak spring or??

If it did it twice in a row without touching the trigger would it be classified as full auto?

Before I did anything I would install another barrel and check it. Sounds to me like you may have a locking lug problem. Also call MGM see what they say. If it never did it before that may be your problem, also if you removed stock and did the trigger work the stock may not be letting the hammer move all the way back and another thing to look at is trigger travel, I had a contender that would go off if you just touched the trigger,I found that the travel screw was too tight and not letting the trigger move back far enough to get a good grip on the hammer, That is about all of the help I can give you.

I just put the factory spring back in and am pretty sure I just got a bad spring. I took a rubber mallet and whacked it a few times and it is still cocked. Would to light a spring cause it?

A light spring could be your problem, but I'm still betting on the locking bolts on the new barrel.  They might need a little polishing to allow them to trip the interlock properly.  The combination of the lighter springs and the new locking bolts could be causing the problem.  By replacing the factory springs, the sear is able to make a better "purchase" on the engagement surfaces,  but I'll bet there is still a chance of an accidental discharge with this new barrel.

My bet is the locking bolts on th new barrel.  With G2 Contenders, which are built very similar to the Encores), the problem comes up when older barrels will not trip the interlock, but the G2 usually will not cock at all.  We usually polish the lock bolts a bit and every thing is fine.

Call MGM and let them know the problem, and suggest that the bolts may not be engaging fully.  See what they say.

When something that has worked stops working then I like to look at the last thing changed.  If it was the barrel try a barrel that you know worked.  I don't know Encores, but with Contenders I have never seen an unexpected firing due to locking bolts, but I have seen plenty that would not cock.

After initially installing the spring the first time did you test it for push off. The after market springs I have seen look flimsy compared to a factory spring. My money would go on the spring being the problem.

YES YES YES I have a 6MM TCU with a 26" octagon barrel built just for a bench toy. The after market spring is so light I can push it off with ease. I use this on my private range and under no circumstance would I use it in the field this way!!!!!!!

I replaced the factory spring and its is fine. Tried the last 3 barrels I bought + the one that came with it. No problems with them. It was the MB spring. I even contacted him and he told me what ot use the stone on to correct it. I had a number 3 spring and he told me to go to a #2

Have G2 and removed the rear stock. When to stock was placed back on the gun the allen screw was placed  without a washer which allowed the screw to go in further. Could not cock the gun. Replaced the washer on the allen screw and everything was fine. Not certain that this would cause the problem you're having. But it did cause a problem with the hammer so I'll mention it.

to light a spring won't hold the sear tight enough to lock in place , been there with a Bullberry triger job. bent the spring to get a little more tension.
