.36 to a .40 re-bore question

This may sound like a strange question but I have an obsolete .36 rifle and the State law for deer is .40 minimum. Is there a company or business that can rebore a black powder rifle  barrel? I looked for barrel parts to make a new .40 or .45 barrel for it and it would be way less to buy a new gun. Just thought I would ask about modifying the exsisting .36 barrel.  Thanks Brent

They called that "freshning" the bore, in the old days.  The barrels deteriorated so badly they had to be re-bored, and lots of odd calibers resulted, but that was okay, 'cause they cast their own balls to fit. 

If I wanted a bigger caliber, I'd opt for another gun.

Try Bobby Hoyt at 717 642-6696, he does good work at very reasonable prices. I had him rebore a .54 T/C New Englander to .58 caliber. The cost was under one hundred bucks with shipping included. I don't recall the wait time but it was nothing terrible, maybe six weeks at he most.
 I've also rebarreled quite a few rifles, both for myself and for others, like they say, "it ain't rocket surgery". Using Green Mountain barrels the total cost was never much over $150 and if you can get a new rifle for less I'd like to know where you shop.

Thanks for the input guys. When I priced out the parts to build a barrel without the machining $ it was almost 400.00.  I think I will contact him to see if he can build be one from scratch. 100.00 to rebore or about 150 for all new, I could keep the original and drop in a new one.   Thanks, Brent

Just spoke to Bobby- NICE guy. He can make a new barrel no problem. I just need to save up some money and call him when I am ready. He is building them for people all the time.
He offered to rebore it as well but since it is a Seneca I want to keep the (old) barrel original. But new one can be up to 45 cal. So this will fix my problem. Thanks Coyote Joe!- Brent

Two things, then I'll shut my yap:

1) .36 cal Seneca's are VERY hard to come by (my state mandates under 40 cal for small game) - and sell for $500+ (sometimes WELL over)

2) IIRC, there's a .45 cal Seneca take-off barrel on either gunbroker or gunsamerica @ $145.
