454 or 460?
« on: March 14, 2010, 05:24:43 PM »
I have a 45lc barrel on the way.  Of course I am going to ream it out.  I like the idea of the 460 S&W in a rifle and I have brass for it....but have hundreds of 454 brass and have a Ruger revolver and will probably go this route.

Any real pros with going 460 over 454 in a 20" barrel?  How is the accuracy with 45lc and 454 in a 460 chamber?

Did you buy the barrel used or did H&R start making them again?  I'd go 454...plenty of rip there.

Used.

I know what the 454 will do out of a 7" Ruger barrel am really thinking I want it in a 20" rifle....worse case I can ream it more.

I'm at the same crossroad as dk17hmr.  I'm debating .454 or .460.  I saw a post a while back, perhaps here, where a person took a .454 to .460 and said the .454s shot better after the reaming.  I went through the same thing with my .44mag to Super and .357 to Max.  I really can't see any difference in accuracy with the shorter rounds in the longer chamber.  Seems to me they shoot better than I do ::) ::)

Having the 45-70, I see no reason for me to try the 460, the 454 is enough for me.  However, I'm not you and if you want to try the 460, go for it.  I would go back thru here and search for Tim's work on the 460 and there may be others as well.  DP

I've never shot 45Colt or Casull in my 460 since the rechamber, so I can't offer any advice, CW reamed his to Casull tho.

I am doing mine to 454 - mostly because I heard someone who had done both say that the 45LCs shot more accurately and consistently out of the 454 than the 460.  I don't want to be faced with having to sell my 45LC ammo and dies.  Besides, the 454 is PLENTY for the kinds of ranges at which deer are taken in the woods in these parts.

well it all depends on, like you said..." range you are shooting"
my .460 will do it from 20 to 150 yrds. probably further.

i have just been amazed with the accuracy of the .460 than the others.
i also have complete rifles in the others, and handguns in them all for hunting.

probably my handloads are a big percentage for the performance.

i did take much more time developing for the .460

did not want to spend too much time for the rifle loads
because my handgun loads are perfect for my needs

and the .460 handloads work excellent in both

its a preference kinda thing....... ;D

Well, that is the other side of the story.  If you want something in a pistol caliber that is going to give you a little flatter trajectory a bit farther out - then the 460 with its high velocity has the edge.  Most shots down east here are under a 100 yards - probably more in the 30-75 yard range.  In most places its hard to shoot farther than that without hitting a tree first - not that there are not places (especially on private land) where you can take that 150 yarder, but those situations are rare for those of us who hunt in the National Forest.

PS:  Gendoc - do you still shoot 45 LC out of that thing?

Tim is accurate, I re-cut my chamber for the 454 and am loving it! It's a great shooter and while the good shooting 45colt loads are now different, it still shoots Colts just as well if not better. But truth be told, I have worked more with accuracy since the re-chamber than before. i simply lucked into my THEN new 45BC shooting my existing 45colt loads well.

My reason for not going 460 was same as DP.. i saw no sense as the 45/70 rules the roost and the 460 cannot better it so why try. The 454 is plenty of increased horse power for what I need.

The very first loading of 454 was a middle of the road velocity wise, with a 300 GD bullet single hole group at 50 yards... maybe an inch.

please don't think i have one to take the place of my 45/70's
its just another project handi thats turned into a masterpiece of accuracy.

and no, i have not shot a colt or casull load in it.
i have them in other rifles.
