Affordable barrels
« on: March 15, 2010, 07:39:39 AM »
Other than Shilen, Lilja, Kreiger, who would you recommend to rebarrel an action for me - including mounting and headspacing???  Looking for decent quality and a good value, but don't need benchrest accuracy.

This is for a hunting gun.  Something with a contour down to .6 at the muzzle at the most.

Thanks!

My next two are going to be from E.R. Shaw.   :-\  Unless the first one isn't any good that is!   ;D

Hart is great quality for the $ but you will end up with bechrest accuracy.
Pac-nor should be considered.

i have one from douglas. very nice stainless featherweight barrel, $300 or so, installed.

google IT&D gunsmithing in Ohio. guy did an excellent job and my rifle is VERY accurate. no complaint whatsoever, even got it done a little ahead of time.

I have it on good authority that the telepromter is writing a stern letter.

last comment is correct anyone can make a mistake. it is how they rectify that mistake or not that really leaves the bad after taste in your mouth. i had heard generally postive things regarding shaw. customer service rep i spoke to really acted indifferent to whole thing and v.p. who got involved at last still has not returned call. my experience with shaw is the one that is important to me. second mistakes cannot occur until the first one.

My experience with Shaw has been good; I rec'ed my last barrel from Shaw last week in 250-3000.  The promised delivery was dead on and the rep I talked to was professional and courteous and emails and phone calls returned.  Having said that; I agree with DD.  Someone elses experience with a company means little to me.  If Shaw treated me as DD relates they did him it would be my last barrel.  I can understand delivery slipping some, but you have to wonder about the wrong caliber.  After them sending me the wrong barrel after missing the delivery so bad and then telling me it will take them 6 weeks to correct their mistake I would be very pissed.  I would have expected them to correct the mistake in days, not weeks.

;) My favorite is Douglas in the air ga. model....all have been very accurate...you can call and get exactly what you want...that is what I would recommend doing...I like blanks and then have my gunsmith cut the chamber and thread it on the action...

Hi,

Ordered a shaw barrel for my Ruger MkII in 43.  22", mag sporter contour, fluted, deluxe blue, action squared, etc.  They told me 26 weeks...it took 26 weeks.  They were very courteous and informative and their work is great.  It all cost, incl. shipping $586.  Shoots 1/2" groups.  I would not have any problem having them do another barrel for me.

I also have several shilen barrels...will cost about $800 to do another and I really don't see any real difference.  I'd use shaw.

I have a .22-6mm Dougles barrel comming from a smith here in Ohio for my Savage. It` going to cost me $ 325 chambered and read to screw into my Savage. I shot the throught out of my 1st one in 1,000 rounds and now have it rechambered so I`ll have a spare when it goes out again. I shot a 2 in group at 600 yrds. the only time I grouped it at that range, and that was over the hood of a truck. Nothing wrong with Doglas barrels.
