jacketed bullet choice for medium Casull loads
« on: March 15, 2010, 01:09:21 PM »
Which off these three Hornady bullets would give the best game performance (deer sized)
when used at a velocity off 1200 ft/s

250 JHP (old 45 LC bullet)
250 XTP
300 XTP (non mag version with dual crimp grooves)
Thanks,
David

I have used the 240 gr XTP .44 cal. bullets at those velocities on deer and they did not expand. I would give the HP`s a try.

The ones I have are not the mag bullets for high power Casull loads so they might work .
Maybe the 44 bullet are also thougher made?
Hopefully somebody can give some expansion results at a velocity arround 1200ft

Hornady recommends a muzzle velocity of 700 to 1500 FPS for their regular XTP bullets. They should work just fine @ 1200.

Both the 250 gr. and 300 gr. standard XTP's will work fine. The 300 gr. is more than necessary, but there's not anything wrong with that.

I'm a believer in Hornadys XTPs.  I've shot half a dozen or more deer with the 44 mag, using the 240 XTP and W296...had good results on all.  Two years ago , I lost a nice buck to my 44 Encore...I was using a 240 Nosler HP.  Maybe the shot placement , maybe not....I'll never know.  I'm using Hornadys again.  I have yet to try the 45s on deer.  Good luck.  BTW my 44 mag load is pushing around 1350 + FPS from my 7 1/2 inch Blackhawk.
