Here is a close up of the refinished stocks.

Notice the black grain in the fore end. I have never noticed that before.

 Nice job!
I have had the strange patterns and dark spots appear also. I just call it character ;)

Looks good Daman.
Did you use BLO for the refinish?

Yes. I used BLO thinned with Mineral Spirits. Both in the Sunnyvale brand I believe. I learned a lesson though. The mixture if left on a rag under a bright light that is over my workspace will combust! If you use it as soon as you are through soak the rags in water and pour the excess mixture out.

Daman it looks good. I,ve done two stock sets so far with the blo & polyurethane and had that same dark grain in the first forend I did. I figured I just didn.t get all the old stain off, but I like it adds character.

This was my second also. I am going to do my Topper 158 22 Hornet next and am seriously debating my NIB 7mm-08. The 7-08 has nice wood, but I am falling for the oil finish.

Looks very nice.  Quick question, what is BLO?

When I was young and foolish (and climbers still slung about 25 pounds of pitons on a sling over their shoulders) I used to treat my piton hammer handles with a mixture of BLO and turpentine.  I still have my old Yosemite hammer - and it still looks good some 40 years later.  That stuff is tough as nails.

If you dont like the spotted finish minwax makes a  pre stain conditioner just for birch and maple woods. it makes the finish take at an even rate. DR
