550 magnum a new dangerous game cartridge.
« on: November 13, 2003, 06:19:00 AM »

458 lott 500gr, 550 mag 700gr, 550 mag 800gr, 600 OK 900gr

Gentleman
I created the 550 magnum to fill in the gap between the .510" and the .585" bore cartridges. The 550 magnum also was designed to use the Cz 550 mag action in 416 Rigby which makes it a simple and cost effective conversion. The desired load will be a 700 gr @2300fps @ 8,222 ftlbs at the muzzle which equals 600 nitro express energy levels. The .550 bore diameter should allow greater peneteration than the 600 nitro and come close to the penetration common to the .510 bore cartridges. The brass is based on cylinderical 378-460 Weatherby so most of the problems common to big bore brass has been eliminated. Head stamped brass should be completed in December.

I will post more imformation later. Please let me know what you think RNS

Solid brass?  I noticed the different color.

I was wondering if someone could explain how one develops a >50 caliber cartridge in compliance with the NFA, since it rules all bores over 1/2 inch except sporting shotguns are Destructive Devices.

Well first it must be classified a sporting cartridge. 600 nitro, 700 nitro, 577 t-rex. Most of them use bore diameters that have been around prior to the ban. I based my bore diameter on the 55-100 maynard. RNS

That thing looks like a beast. I love it. Living out in West Texas I really couldnt use it, but I'd love to. I was thinkin about gettin a CZ .416 Rigby. Thats one helluva conversion, what does a conversion like that cost?

Ingwenya

First let me say that this cartridge was designed in april of this year and as of November (8 months) we have 8 barrels on order correctly head stamped brass and a growing list of companies supporting this cartridge.

Companies supporting this cartridge so far are

Barrels @ Cut Rifle/Wells Sport http://www.cutrifle.com/barrels.html

Bullets @ Hawk http://www.hawkbullets.com/
Bridger http://www.bridgerbullets.com/
GS Custom ( Said they would )

Head Stamped Brass @ Quality Cartridge http://www.owlnet.com/quality/

Loaded Ammo @ Quality Cartridge

Realoding Dies @ C&H Tool and Die http://www.ch4d.com/

Gunsmiths @ MICHAEL SCHEAR email @ gilagunwks@aol.com

Reamers @ Manson Reamers

This cartridge would cost the same as any big bore conversion 500 a2 and others like it.

The barrels are by Wells Sport store who are very well known for top Quality big bore rifles and the barrels are $380.00 with an intergral recoil lug

Brass is the same cost as 500 A2 since it is made from the same thing. That will vary depending on the manufacture. Bell brass is $2.00 a piece with out head stamp. Dieter Horneber is producing a run that I am waiting on and I am sure the shipping will raise the cost a little. Bruce Bertram also has brass and we have exchanged email on his brass. Quality Cartridge will charge a small fee to head stamp, clean, trim, polish the case.

Stock is kind of up to you but any big bore stock is probably $250.00 and up

Hawk bullets are with in a few cents of Andy's .510" and .585" bullets they are about $1.00 apiece

Dies are $160.00 for a 1" die body

We are working on a cast bullet from a well known maker who has a well known reputation of being able to shoot his bullets at 2,000 fps and a guess on the cost will be .30-.35 cents apiece.

Cleaning equipment is 28 ga both have a .550 bore.

Hope this helps RNS
