.223 case trim length
« on: March 16, 2010, 02:19:11 AM »
i have 4 reload books. 2 say 1.750" for the .223, and the other 2 say 1.760" case trim length. that's not too bad either way but i was given a bunch of primed brass that measures 1.763-1.776 in length. is there a way to trim them without loosing the primers? they even chamber but i figure they will bind at the neck if loaded and fired. if it was only a few it wouldn't matter but there are 250

Any hand-cranked case trimmer I've seen can do it.

Make up a dummy round (no powder and mark it so it won't get "fired") with one of the longer cases and if it will still chamber, go ahead and try them. Otherwise as wncchester said; a hand crank trimmer.

Ya, check your neck depth first. My chamber neck is way out at 1.79!
You can cut/or find a case short, say 1.70 save a small split ring of the case. Seat a bullet in that case, then slide that ring over the bullet and chamber it, the split ring will/should stop at the chamber neck and slide down the bullet to give you an idea where the neck ends.
I shoot break action singles, so it was easy to do a cerro safe chamber cast. Knowing chamber dimention may not do anything for me, but I like to know.
