Strange Arasaka
« on: March 16, 2010, 09:50:17 AM »
I have a really strange Arasaka that has found it's way into my safe.
I ma having pictures developed but it will not take the firing pin and safety bolt of a standard arasaka.
It looks like your standard arasaka from a distance Long bolt action with the lemon bolt sticking strait out.
It has a single shot configuration.  with the Magizine just hollowed out to hold a round to be pushed in by the bolt.
Now the bolt is strange too.  It does not have opposing lugs but uses the bolt handle for a locking lug.
The bolt face looks more like a 22 buy Win, Rem, Cz. than a mauser style bolt.
On the left side of the reciever there is an X89.
Any one have any ideas?

Or one of Japan's last ditch rifles. Does it appear rather crudely built and put together?

Look at the chamber and tell us what it looks like.   They did have training rifles, could be a .22.  Larry

look up "Substitute type 99" and see it it is similar.
There was also a "Type I" that was kind of different.

The Japaneese kept very good records.  I had a type 38 in 6.5 and was able to do an internet search to find the arsinal and date of manufacture.  They had two basic battle rifles the type 99 and type 38.  The first chambered in 7.7 the later in 6.5 They were very similar and both very good battle and extreamly strong rifles.  The last ditch rifles were just that desperation efforts at the end of the war.  Japan had a hard time getting raw materials and steel.  It's factories were being bombed so the relied on cottage industry.  The metalergy was poor, the sites poor.  The stock was rough and they had a piece of wood with two nails for a butt plate instead of a metal butt plate.  The Japaneese put a mum (Carsanthamum) on all their military equipment to show it was property of the Emperior.  The last ditch was such a poor rifle they didn't put the Mun on them.  The guns were chambered in 7.7 jap.  That said it sounds like you have a rare training rifle. If I get a chance I'll try to find my research material but believe I sent to my brother.  An internet search should prove interesting and informative.  A word of caution, some of these rifles that were brought back as spoils were rechambered.  A commom rechamber for the type 39 (6.5) was to 6.5 x 257 Roberts.  I'm not sure what they did to the 7.7.
