Latest Project Frame up build
« on: March 16, 2010, 12:38:14 PM »
Well.... impulse got the best of me.  I was at the Springfield Gun Show and picked up a RemSport forged frame and slide.

I intend on making this a nice 1911 shooter and will develop modifications as I go along.

I will keep you posted with my "build"

Hey Bob,

I was at that show, and I've got some interest in the Remsports too. I'm toying with building a Commander length pistol for target and carry.
Obviously you like the Remsport products. What can you tell me about them. I wanted to talk with the sellers but they were busy with other people.........probably You!!! ;D
I've built on Essex and Caspian in the past and like Caspian the best, but this Remsport is new to me and the market............What made you choose Remsport?

Tom

Well Essex right now is not in full production since they are moving operations to Florida (Okay Essex if you read this...... chicken to stay in the cold!!  ;D ) and Remsport got my attention so I decided to give it a whirl. I spent some time at the show finding a tight but near fitted slide.

Okay so we are at Part one.  I have collected/ordered "most" of the parts. Full size with front/rear serrations, the frame has the .250 cut for the beavertail safety and it is necessary to use the 38 firing pin.  I have sights coming from Dawson to fit the Novak cut's in the slide.  Today, I hope to stake the plunger tube (I have a friend with a tool).

The trigger, sear, hammer are all lower end wilson stuff.

I lapped the slide and frame yesterday...... now it is smooth as glass.  Staked the plunger tube, installed the ejector, grip bushings and started to do a preliminary assembly.

Hit a glitch..... bad thumb safety but have a new one coming.

So, I am in a holding pattern pending a few parts.

I just viewed the Jerry K 1911 armorers video last night and finally watched it thru one sitting.  The fitting of the sear seems to be the hardest thing to do. I guess we need a fixture to square both parts up.  The other stuff doesn't seem that bad.  I already fitted a new barrel and a national match barrel bushing in my norc and it shoots/cycles awesome now with the full length guide rod too. Its funny that with just a few added parts what a difference in the 1911 it can make.

I purchased the frame parts kit and the slide / parts kit from www.sportsmansguide.com  Now i figure instead of buying just the frame i'd rather go with a fitted slide and frame.

My only problem is finding a local dealer to get me the frame/slide.  I get the deaf ear when i want to purchase just the frame for a build.  They just don't get it, i'm retired and bored all winter and doing a build would prevent cabin fever.

The easiest way to get a frame is to go to your FFL and have him order what you want from who you want.
I like Caspian and the services they offer.
That is what I got for a slide on my BBQ build-up.
The frame is a a Colt Commander.

Here is a suggestion.....

Google FFL in your home town and you should be able to come up with a list of FFL holder's

Make a few telephone calls and ask if they are willing to accept the frame on a transfer and do the BATF 4473 form.  It should not cost you but a few bucks ($25-40 is the norm).  You are certain to find a small local guy and not a dealer ;)

If you call Caspian Arms direct you can purchase a "fitted" slide/frame but it does cost more and if you do you might as well ask to have the plunger tube staked and the ejector installed.  If you ordered a parts kit, chances are it will come with a 45 firing pin and you will need a 9mm pin and spring from somewhere (caspian has them too).

My frame was from Remsport in Ludlow Ma and they can be found online too ..... if you call speak with Ron or John.

Good luck  ;)

It was a cheap one and I was not happy with it.  I ordered an STI one.  I am getting a regular one not an ambi one.  Should be here this week.
