Shooting Vises & Lead Sleds
« on: March 16, 2010, 03:25:54 PM »
I just can't use them for anything.  I do my best shooting off one canvas bag filled with styrofoam pellets.  My shooting buddy has 2 of them and I think they are so awkward and unenjoyable to use.  I mean if you aren't even touching the rifle what's the point.

i like using my lead sled to sight in. eliminats human error, and when you're on, you know you're on. also if you're shooting 4" groups out of the sled you know it ain't just cause you're having a bad day. helps with recoil off the bench, too. i don't use it other than to sight in or check zero.
I'm just a bitter Christian clinging to my gun.

I agree Swampman.  I have to be holding the rifle on the bench, the butt on 10# rice bags inside old cut off jean pant legs, and the forearm on an independent rest.  I am sure I am not going to be carrying a 'lead sled" to the blind with me when I pll the trigger on game.

I have never used a lead sled but I have used a shooting vise.  It works good for showing the mechanical accuracy potential of a firearm as 243 shooter pointed out but what I found with the vise that I used is that the point of impact is significantly different when it is zeroed using the vise and then the rifle is fired from bags or a field shooting position.  Sometimes there was as much as a foot difference which basically rendered it useless for zeroing a hunting gun.  Another good use for them that I can see is for load development because if you are going to be testing several different loads during a sesssion it would take the fatigue factor out of it.  I gave the one I had to a buddy that built custom muzzle loading rifles and he uses it to proof test the rifles he has built to insure they are safe.  Now depending on what type of rifle I am zeroing/shooting I will zero either off bags or from a supported postion.

Besides that, I believe there has been some reports of the Lead Sled being a good way to get a cracked stock?...This might not be too wide spread and I personnally have had too good of luck shooting off the sandbags to consider trying one.
